The Video Game Awards is a Time to Celebrate the Video Game Industry

Every once in a while, the video game industry celebrates the diversity of the year. Usually, there’s award events at the end of the year. Much like the film as well as the television industries. However, this year has been quite the rollercoaster. As we know, this year brought a lot on all of us. With that, the video game industry has gain a lot of traction. Sure, there have been changes with work within video game developers. However, games this year have still broken barriers. From Animal Crossing: New Horizons to Among Us, games have been all over the place this year. Then, on December 10, 2020, The Video Game Awards made its way to YouTube and Twitch. Which games were winners this year? Let’s find out together.

In this review, we’re analyzing The Video Game Awards winners to see how each one of these games stood out in order to win these awards.

Final Fantasy VII Remake Wins at The Video Game Awards For Best Role-Playing and Best Score/Music

The Video Game Awards
This image features Final Fantasy VII Remake’s main character, Cloud Strife. According to SQUARE ENIX CO., LTD. website under the article FINAL FANTASY VII Remake Media, SQUARE ENIX CO., LTD. state that “the rights for Final Fantasy VII Remake belong to SQUARE ENIX CO., LTD., and Yoshitaka Amano(15).  This image is on SQUARE ENIX CO., LTD. website under the article, FINAL FANTASY VII Remake “Media.

At The Video Game Awards, Final Fantasy VII Remake The first category The Video Game Awards goes into is Best Score/Music.  Unsurprisingly, this award goes to the one and only, Final Fantasy VII Remake.  Now for this year, this category had a wide range of music that anyone could be a winner.  However, the winner of Best Score/Music in a video game is Final Fantasy VII Remake.  This game has some of the most beautiful music.  Before playing this remake, I knew some of the music from the original Final Fantasy VII.  As the original was a gamechanger for many gamers in the late 1990s.

Within Final Fantasy VII Remake’s music, there’s a wide range of different instruments and tempos.  The music feels alive and makes the scenes much more emotional.  Which is what this category really represents. Final Fantasy VII Remake also won Best Role-Playing Game.  This game shows new and old gameplay.  The gameplay is fast pace and doesn’t stop like the original Final Fantasy VII. However, there are tactics to stop gameplay to do orders. Much like the original game.  Single-handedly, this game earns these two awards.  While Final Fantasy VII Remake wins two awards, Animal Crossing: New Horizons wins for Best Family Game.

Best Family Game Award Goes to Animal Crossing: New Horizons

The Video Game Awards

As The Video Game Awards continues, we dive into the category of Best Family Game.  In 2020, there was a lot of need for family games.  With the pandemic, lock downs, and so much going on this year, family games are more important now than ever.  Which is where Animal Crossing: New Horizons falls in. Animal Crossing: New Horizons has helped so many individuals, families, and gamers during 2020.  As this game has the capability to connect with others.  Plus, this game has been incredibly popular with families. As this game is just about spending time with your neighbors.  Personally, Animal Crossing: New Horizons has helped me during 2020.  Whenever I need a break to turn off the world, I jump into my island on Animal Crossing: New Horizons

This game has helped so many people during this year and I’m so happy this game won an award at The Video Game Awards.  As Animal Crossing: New Horizons shows the love at The Video Game Awards, Falls Guys wins in another category.

Fall Guys Wins The Video Game Award for Best Community Support

This image is a gif of a scene from Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout.  According to the official Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout website, Mediatonic Games states that “the rights, as well as the credit for this game, belong to Mediatonic Games and Devolver Digital(1).  This image is on Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout Steam page under Announcements “SEASON 2.5 UPDATE IS LIVE!”

Within video games, developer and gamer communication is vital. Unfortunately, not all developers have an open door for gamers to talk to them about their games.  Yet, there are some games that have an incredibly tight communication with developers and gamers. At The Video Game Awards this year, Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout wins for Best Community Support.  Just this year, this game became incredibly popular.  Being played by so players this year, it’s no wonder that Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout won for Best Community Support.  This game has made so many updates as well as customizations that it’s no wonder this game one. Now, this isn’t to say that the other games in this category didn’t have good community support.  In fact, there’s a lot of video games in this category that has an incredible community support.

However, with Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout, this game really put their community forward.  The creators of this game made tournaments did watch-a-thons, and so much more.  Honestly, seeing a game like this blossom into a creative and connective community is huge.  The Video Game Awards really nailed it with this game-winning the Best Community Support.  The next award The Video Games goes into is the famous multiplayer, ghost hunting game, Phasmophobia.

Phasmophobia Scares Audiences and Wins the Video Game Award for Best Debut Game

This image is the official promotional artwork for Phasmophobia.  According to Kinetic Games official website under the article “Phasmophobia”, Kinetic Games states that “Phasmophobia belongs and is created by Kinetic Games(3).  This image is on Phasmophobia’s Steam page as the header.

The next game that wins at The Video Game Awards is Phasmophobia.   Phasmophobia won in the category of Best Debut Game.  Honestly, this game has so much to offer.  For those who are unaware, Phasmophobia is a multiplayer, ghost hunting game.  As a team, the team needs to go into an abandoned area to find a ghost that is haunting the area.  As such, this game can be incredibly chaotic as well as fun.  This game first got recognized through streamers on twitch in addition to people on YouTube.  From there, Phasmophobia explode into the multiplayer game it is today.  Honestly, it’s so exciting to see this independent game win this award for Best Debut Game.  As this game will undoubtedly help other developers make their own games.

Right after the Video Game Awards announces this winner, they go into the category of Best Ongoing Game.

No Mans Sky Shows Support to Win Best Ongoing Game

This image is an official promotional artwork for No Man’s Sky.  According to No Man’s Sky’s official website under the article, “Press”, Hello Games states that “the company responsible for the creation and publication of this game is Hello Games(2).   This image is on No Man’s Sky’s Facebook under “Photos”

The next award we’re going to look into is Best Ongoing Game. This category winner is No Man’s Sky. Originally, No Man’s Sky had a bad release.  With bugs, as well as nothing to offer, No Man’s Sky was not looking good. Then, Home Games began to interact with gamers through social media.  As a result, No Man’s Sky has gotten several updates and regular content.  In fact, No Man’s Sky has a huge support system on their social media account. To which gamers can interact with Hello Games about issues and compliments.  Being able to see this is incredible.  Unfortunately, there have been games that have come out that have little to no interaction with developers and gamers.  It’s no surprise that this game won the Video Game Award for Best Ongoing.  While No Man’s Sky establishes communication with its gamers, Ghost of Tsushima wins for Best Art Direction.

Hades Rocks the Underworld By Winning at The Video Game Awards With Best Action Game

This image is the official promotional artwork for Hades.  According to Supergiant Game’s official website under the article “Hades”, Supergiant Games expresses that “the rights, as well as the credit for this game, belongs to Supergiant Games(4).  This image is on Supergiant Games Facebook page under the section “Photos”.

Generally, action games are put within another genre.  Much like films and television shows.  With video games, action games are incredibly fun. Whether it be Doom to Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, action games have shape the video game industry.  As such, The Video Game Awards gives an award to the Best Action Game.  This year’s Best Action Game goes to Supergiant Games game, Hades.  From first look, this game was meant to be an action game. From the fluid animation to use of different magic, Hades has a lot to offer. Now, this isn’t to say the other games in this category are bad games. In fact, the Best Action category has many games that are game breaking.  However, Hades has fast pace, fun action that makes this game that more enjoyable.

While Hades by Supergiant Games won Best Action game, Half-Life Alyx wins for Best VR/AR game.

Half-Life: Alyx Changes What VR Games Can Be By Winning Best VR/AR Game

This image is the official poster for Half-Life: Alyx.  According to Half-Life’s official website under the article “Half-Life: Alyx”, Valve Software explains that “the rights, as well as credit for this game, belongs to Valve Software(18).  This image is on Half-Life’s website under the article “Half-Life: Alyx”.

VR has been changing over the years. With the change of technology available, Virtual Reality games have become experiences.  The Video Game Awards celebrate the growth of VR/AR games.  The winner of this category this year is Half-Life: Alyx.  With that said, Half-Life: Alyx is the game we need to see.  This game shows what Virtual Games can be.  That a Triple-A video game development company can make a VR game.  For those who are unaware, Half-Life: Alyx is made by Valve.  Valve is the video game company who’s made Team Fortress 2, Portal, and Half-Life.  The immersion in this game is amazing. From what we see in the trailers, Half-Life: Alyx has a huge amount of detail.  Anyone who has access to VR should check out this game.  Valve has out done themselves again with Half-Life: Alyx

With Half-Life: Alyx winning at The Video Game Awards for Best VR/AR, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 wins for Best Sports/Racing Game.

Tony Hawk: Pro Skater 1+2 Skates to New Heights By Winning the Category of Best Sports/Racing Game

This image is an official screenshot of Tony Hawk: Pro Skater 1+2.  According to Tony Hawk: Pro Skater 1+2 website, Activision Publishing Inc expresses that “the rights as well as the credit for this game belongs to Activision Publishing Inc. Tony Hawk, Inc. and Vicarious Visions” (22).  This image is on Tony Hawk: Pro Skater 1+2 under the section, “Gallery”.

Now, sport games have had ups and downs.  Some sports games have been really bad.  While others have been incredibly good.  Every year at The Video Game Awards, gamers come together to celebrate sport and racing games.  This year, Tony Hawk: Pro Skater 1+2 won for Best Sports/Racing Game.  Actually, we did a news announcement article on Tony Hawk: Pro Skater 1+2’s announcement. From the different games this category has, I feel like Tony Hawk: Pro Skater 1+2 is the clear winner.  This game had so much to offer.  Yes, this game is a remaster. Sometimes, remasters don’t have much to the player much like Super Mario 3D All-Stars.  Yet, this Tony Hawk game doesn’t do that.  If anything, this game takes what makes these games great and added more to it.

In fact, this game made me as well as a lot of other people to replay the older games in the Tony Hawk Pro Skater series.  Hopefully, this will be the motivation to remaster other Tony Hawk Pro Skater games.  Only time will tell.  While Tony Hawk: Pro Skater 1+2 wins for Best Sports/Racing Game, Elden Ring wins for Most Anticipated Game.

Elden Ring Explodes the Internet By Winning Most Anticipated Game Award at The Video Game Awards

This image is the official poster of Elden Ring.  According to Bandai Namco’s website under the article “Elden Ring”, Bandai Namco Entertainment America Inc. explains that “the rights as well as the credit for Elden Ring belongs to Bandai Namco Entertainment America Inc.” (2).  This image is on Elden Ring’s Facebook under the section, “Photos”.

The announcements of games are so exciting. All of the different theories and the anticipation is so exciting.  With the Video Game Awards, there’s even an award for Most Anticipated Game.  This year’s winner goes to Elden Ring.  Last year, Elden Ring came to be after E3 2019.  At first, I didn’t know anything about this game.  Honestly, I thought The Legend of Zelda: Breathe of the Wild 2 announcement would win. Especially since that announcement made the internet explode.  However when I did look into this announcement, Elden Ring is a pretty big deal.  According to Bandai Namco’s website under the article “Elden Ring”, Bandai Namco Entertainment America Inc. explains that “Elden Ring is being made by George R.R. Martin and Hidetaka Miyazaki” (1).   Two incredibly well-known content creators are coming together to make a game.

This news alone is huge.  Honestly after hearing this news, Elden Ring sounds like a phenomenal game.  I’m ecstatic that these two brilliant minds are coming together to make a new game.  While Elden Ring wins for Most Anticipated Game, Tell Me Why wins for Games for Impact.

Tell Me Why Shows LGBTQ+ Representation and Wins The Video Game Award For Games for Impact

This image is an official screenshot of Tell Me Why.  According to Tell Me Why’s official website, Microsoft states that “the rights, as well as the creation of this game, belong to Xbox Game Studios and Dontnod Entertainment(5).  This image is on Tell Me Why’s official website under “Media”.

The next award The Video Game Awards goes into Games for Impact.  The winner of this category is Tell Me Why.  This game deserves this win for several reasons.  Firstly, Tell Me Why features the first transgender voice actor voicing a transgender character.  Now, transgender characters have been in video games before.  For instance, Dragon Age: Inquisition has Krem who is transgender Female to Male.  However, this game is different.  This game follows a pair of twins as they go back to their hometown.  They revisit elements of their past.  At first glance, this game looks very story driven.  Which is totally fine. The way the audiences can see the past is through pixel particles.  Tell Me Why is a path forward to more LGBTQ+ story representation.  With this win, other games can come forward with new stories to tell.

While Tell Me Why wins for Games for Impact, an incredibly popular indie game Among Us wins two awards.

Indie Game Among Us Wins at The Video Game Awards For Best Multiplayer Game and Best Mobile Game

The Video Game Awards
This image is the official cover art for Among Us.  According to Innersloth’s website under the article “Among Us”, Innersloth explains “ the rights, as well as the credit of Among Us, belongs to Innersloth(1).  This image is on Innersloth’s official website under the article “Among Us”

You sound pretty Sus… More than likely, this saying is familiar. In this year, Among Us has swept through mobile as well as PC gaming.  YouTubers, streams, and gamers alike are jumping into this game like wildfire.  As such, Among Us won two categories at The Video Game Awards.  These two categories include Best Multiplayer and Best Mobile Game.  Among Us has an amazing multiplayer capability.  Put a bunch of your friends in, jump into discord, and chaos ensues.  Even if you don’t have friends to play with, there’s a chat system.  People in the game can chat with each other about who is the impostor.  All in all, Among Us is a super fun multiplayer game. Among Us also won for Best Mobile Game.

The Mobile version of the game isn’t bad.  At first, I was skeptical.  However, they do give first-time players a chance to learn the game by “FreePlay”.  I kind of wish the chatting was a little easier but it’s works for the mobile version.  Plus, the mobile version is free. Yes, there’s stuff you can buy to customize your crewmate. However, anyone can pick it up and play this game.  This game is huge also because of the pandemic.  Most people having to stay home jump into a game or two with Among Us. If you haven’t tried this game yet, give it a try. Among Us defiantly deserves these two awards.  While Among Us won two awards, Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate knocks out the competition.

Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate Destroys Their Enemies to Win For Best Fighting Game

This image is official promotional artwork for Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate. According to Mortal Kombat’s official website, Warner Brothers Entertainment Inc.  explains that “the rights, as well as creation of this game belong to NetherRealm Studios and Warner Brothers Entertainment Inc.(6). This image is on Mortal Kombat’s Facebook page under the section “Photos”

Get over here!! Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate has been a fighting game gamers have been playing.  If gamers aren’t playing Super Smash Brothers Ultimate, they’re playing Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate.  Players love the characters and the feeling of just being able to defeat the opponent.  As such, Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate wins at The Video Game Awards for Best Fighting game.  Now, I have yet to play this fighting game.  However, from what I’ve seen, Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate is still the brutal yet fun fighting game.  This game has a whole bunch of characters as well as story.  This amount of content is incredibly exciting for those who are in the competitive Mortal Kombat.  With all of the things Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate has to offer, this win for Best Fighting game is well deserve.

While Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate wins for Best Fighting Game, Microsoft Flight Simulator wins for Best SIM/Strategy game.

Microsoft Flight Simulator Soars Through The Sky to Win The Video Game Awards

This image is an official screenshot from Microsoft: Flight Simulator.  According to Xbox’s official website under the article, “Microsoft: Flight Simulator”, Microsoft explains that, “the right, as well as the creation of this game, belongs to Xbox Games Studios and Asobo Studio(7).  This image is on Xbox’s official website under the article, “Microsoft: Flight Simulator, Game Features”.

If you look on your left, you’ll see The Video Game Awards winner for Best SIM/Simulation, Microsoft: Flight Simulator.  For many, Simulation games are some gamers favorite genre.  Some simulation games include Animal Crossing, The Sims, and Minecraft.  However, Microsoft: Flight Simulator came out that has caught gamer’s attention. This game has some of the most beautiful graphics.  Not only that but this game is really relaxing.  Yeah, Microsoft: Flight Simulator has an objective of flying from one place to another.  Yet, the player can just mess around and fly wherever.  Honestly, it surprises me that Animal Crossing: New Horizons as well as The Sims 4 didn’t get the nomination.  Regardless, the team responsible for this game should be so proud about this award.

Especially with everything that’s has been happening this year, simulator games are what we need.  Just when Microsoft: Flight Simulator wins Best SIM/Simulation, Ghost of Tsushima takes the prize several times.

Player’s Voice As Well As Art Direction at The Video Game Awards Goes to Ghost Of Tsushima

This image is an official screenshot from Ghost of Tsushima.  According to Super Punch’s official website under the article, “Ghost of Tsushima”, Super Punch Productions LLC explains that, “the rights, as well as credit for Ghost of Tsushima, belong to Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC and Sucker Punch Productions LLC.” (3).  This image is on Sucker Punch Production’s Facebook page under “Photos”

Lastly, we’re going to take a look at the Ghost of Tsushima.  This game won both Player’s Voice in addition to Best Art Direction.  Firstly, let’s look at Player’s Voice. This award is chosen by gamers.  As The Video Game Awards are mostly determined by professional journalists, video game developers, and so many more.  At The Video Game Awards, however, the Player’s Voice Award is the award by the gamers.  Honestly, there’s no surprise that this game would win Player’s Voice. Ghost of Tsushima struck a chord within gamers.  The animation, the story, and the character all make this game what it is.  While The Game of the Year may be a different winner this year, this one category makes gamer’s voices known.

Ghost of Tsushima also wins the award for Best Art Direction.  There are so many outstanding games that are in this category.  Some of which we see in this award show like Final Fantasy VII Remake, The Last of Us Part II, and Hades for example.  However, without a doubt, Ghost of Tsushima deserves this award.  This game’s art style is breath taking.  The animation fluidity is outstanding.  Yet, seeing from gameplay of Ghost of Tsushima, it’s no wonder why this game won this category.  It’s no wonder why so many gamers have a deep dedication to this game.  The team at Super Punch did an outstanding job with this game.

All in All, The Video Game Awards Has a Wide Range of Different of Winners Showing the Diversity of the Video Game Industry

Within this review, we thoroughly discuss the different winners at The Video Game Awards. Firstly, we took a look at Final Fantasy VII Remake. From Best Score to Player’s Voice, The Video Game Awards showcases a wide range of different games. This shows once again the diversity the video game industry has within 2020. Now than ever, video games are keeping us sane during these uncertain times. With that said, these games that have won will hopefully inspire other developers to publish their own games. Now, we have yet to cover The Last of Us Part II wins, announcements, E-sports, and music this event has to offer. However, these games need their own recognition. Every single one was able to stand out from their competitors. This is what makes The Video Game Awards is all about.
