2020 Has Been a Particularly Hard Year for the Film Industry

Within the entertainment industry, there are various award shows.  In order to showcase the best of the best films, artists, writers, and so many others in their respective categories. Usually, there’s a main award show for each industry.  Broadway has their own award show with The Tonys.  Television has The Golden Globes.  Music has The Grammys.  Then, there’s the film industry with The Academy Awards otherwise known as The Oscars.  The Academy Awards is one of the most highly regarded film award show within the film industry.  Being able to get an Oscar is the highest honor within the film industry.  Many filmmakers put their blood, sweat, and tears into possibly getting the chance of getting a nomination or winning an Oscar.  Even if a team doesn’t win, they still have the highest honor of getting a nomination.

In fact, audiences will be more likely to check out a production team’s work if they have either a nomination or winner of an Oscar.  That’s how high many people hold The Academy Awards.  Within 2020, this year was exceptionally hard on the film industry.  Many film companies either having to push back projects, work on projects remotely, or having to release films on streaming services.  Regardless, there have been several films that have come out this past year that have to help all of us get through this incredibly hard year.  On March 15, 2021, The Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences release their Oscar Nominations for the 93rd Academy Awards.  Which films stood out in 2020? Let’s find out together. Within this news article, we are going to fully examine the 93rd Oscar Nomination list for the Academy Awards happening on April 25, 2021.

The 93rd Oscar Nominations Releases the Nominations for Actress in a Supporting Role

Firstly, let’s take a look at the category for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.  The Supporting Role is just as important as the leading actress role.  As this character assists the main character along within their story.  In 2020, there were several actresses who stood out from the rest.  According to The Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences official Oscar YouTube page under the video 93rd Oscar Nominations,  Priyanka Chopra Jonas expresses:

“the following nominations for ‘Actress in a Supporting Role’ include, Maria Bakalova, Olivia Colman, Glenn Close, Yuh-Jung Youn, and Amanda Seyfriend” (1:302:07).

These actresses stood out from the rest of their peers.  Obviously, The Academy sees their performances as more than an actress playing a role.  These actresses help bring characters the writers wrote to life.  Now, 2020 has a lot of films with outstanding performances from actresses in a supporting role.  However, these select few were selected by The Academy for their performances within their films.  While these actresses wow audiences as well as The Academy with their performances, the next following films wow audiences with Costume Design.

The Follow Films Wow Audiences to Win the Nomination in Costume Design

After the reveal of the “Actress in a Supporting Role”, the Oscar nominations go into “Costume Design”.  Now, costume design is incredibly important within a live-action film.  As costumes help transport the audience into either a new universe or a period of time.  Well, the following films made in 2020 are up for an Academy Award.  According to The Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences official Oscar YouTube page under the video 93rd Oscar Nominations,  Nick Jonas discusses:

“the nominations for ‘Costume Design’ consist of Emma, Mulan, Mank, Pinocchio, and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” (2:102:32)

The following films went above and beyond within the eyes of The Academy.  Now, this doesn’t mean that other films didn’t do a wonderful job.  In fact, there were several films that did a serviceable job with their costume design.  Within the selection process,  members of The Academy thoroughly analyze films.  One of these categories is Costume Design.  Not only does a costume help transport the audience, but the costume helps reflect a lot about a character.  Colors, cloth type, and the age of clothing tell a lot about a character.  For example, Belle from Beauty and the Beast wears a blue and white dress.  From the first moment she’s seen within her town, Belle stands out.  As most of the town folks are in earthly colors like green and browns.  Safe to say, costume design can tell the audience a lot about the characters.

With this selection, each one of them not only makes the characters stand out.  These films also transport the audience to a universe as well as a period with Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.  While these films win the nomination for “Costume Design”, another set of films stands out for “Best Original Score”.

Several Films Within 2020 Stand Out to Win the Oscar Nomination of Best Original Score

During the 93rd Oscar Nominations, one category The Academy releases nominations for is “Best Original Score”.  According to The Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences official Oscar YouTube page under the video 93rd Oscar Nominations,  Nick Jonas explains:

“the nominations for ‘Best Original Score’ go to Soul, Da 5 Bloods, Minari, News of the World, and Mank” (2:332:58).

Within the film industry, music is everything.  Sometimes, music is the voice of a film.  Some of the most memorable moments in cinema history are more powerful because of the score.  In fact, many musicians try to audition for the chance to be in a symphony orchestra.  With that, there are several films in 2020 whose score struck into the heart of members of The Academy.  This selection has an incredibly strong collection of music to help tell the story.  To be honest, this list is incredibly hard to determine which is the best.  As all of them each create emotion as well as a sense for the story.  The winner of this category will be interesting as all of these films have outstanding scores.  While the scores are incredibly important within a film, the writing is crucial.

The Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences Recognizes the Best Writers for Best Screen Adapted Screenplay in the Following Oscar Nominations

Writing is one of the most crucial parts of any entertainment industry.  Especially when it comes to films. As films only have a certain amount of time to fully unravel a story.  Within The Academy Awards, writing is split into two categories.  Firstly, let’s take a look at the nominations for “Best Screen Adapted Screenplay”.  According to The Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences official Oscar YouTube page under the video 93rd Oscar Nominations, Priyanka Chopra Jonas reveals:

“the nominations for ‘Best Screen Adapted Screenplay’ comprises of The Father, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm: Delivery of Prodigious Bribe to American Regime for Make Benefit Once Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan, The White Tiger, One Night in Miami, and Nomadland ” (3:024:07).

These films take an already existing source and writers form it into a screenplay.  Honestly, this form of writing is incredibly difficult.  As theirs already an expectation of the original source.  Plus, the writers have to keep in mind the new audiences coming into this franchise.  While at the same time not babying the original source fans.  However, these films selected by The Academy show the writers balance of new yet original fans.  There are some films in this category that may even get audiences into looking at the original source.  Regardless, these films show the balance source base films need to do in order to be successful.  While the Oscar Nominations discusses “Best Screen Adapted Screenplay”, there’s another category of writing in “Best Original Screenplay”.

Five Films Within 2020 Stood Out for Best Original Screenplay

The second writing category the 93rd Oscar Nominations goes into is “Best Original Screenplay”.  According to The Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences official, Oscar YouTube page under the video 93rd Oscar Nominations, Priyanka Chopra Jonas adds:

“the nominations for ‘Best Original Screenplay’ include Judas and the Black Messiah, The Trial of the Chicago 7, Sound of Metal, Minari, and Promising Young Woman” (4:084:58).

Much like screen-adapted screenplay, original screenplays are just as difficult to create.  Original screenplays are complete original pieces of work.  Which are not based on another piece of material. As such, there are some films that fall flat when it comes to the story.  Which essentially kills the whole vibe of the film.  The Academy made a selection of five films which original stories stand out from the rest of the films in 2020.  This selection will undoubtedly make moviegoers want to watch some of the best original screenplays.  It’ll be interesting to see which one of these films will be able to win this year’s Academy Award.  After this reveal, the Oscar Nominations goes into “Animated Short Film”.

2020 Brings a Number of Oscar Nominations in Animated Short

After Priyanka reveals the nominations for “Best Original Screenplay”, the next category reveal is “Animated Short Films”.  According to The Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences official Oscar YouTube page under the video 93rd Oscar Nominations,  Nick Jonas discusses:

the nominations for ‘Animated Short Films’ contains Burrow, If Anything Happens, I Love You, Yes-People, Opera, and Genius Loci” (5:005:26).

Animated Short Films can be an incredibly powerful source of media. As many of them don’t contain any words.  As a result, many rely on animation and music to tell the story.  Animated short films have a pretty deep dedication of fans.  Especially this past year with the global pandemic.  Many short films made their way onto streaming services in 2020.  As a result, there are a lot of short animation films in 2020.  So, the pickings for this year’s Academy Awards was undoubtedly incredibly hard.  However, this selection The Academy made shows a wide of different shorts that came out in 2020.  Much like the short animation films, the Live Action Short Films were a treat this past year too.

Next, The Oscar Nominations Selects Five Actors for Actor in a Support Role

Next, the Oscar Nominations goes into the next category of “Actor in a Supporting Role”.  According to The Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences official Oscar YouTube page under the video 93rd Oscar Nominations,  Priyanka Chopra Jonas discusses:

“the nominations for ‘Actor in a Supporting Role’ belong to Daniel Kaluuya, Lakeith Stanfield, Paul Raci, Sacha Baron Cohen, and Leslie Odom, Jr.” (5:526:28).

These actors put all of their talents into a supporting role.  Even though these characters are not the main role, supporting characters are just as important.  These actors put their blood, sweat, and tears into their characters.  Which pushes the main character into the main story.  The following actors that The Academy nominates go above and beyond to be a supporting characters.  Another category that this nomination Livestream reveals is “Documentary Feature”.

Documentaries Make a Step in the Oscar Nominations with the Category Documentary Feature

The next category we get into is “Documentary Feature”.  According to The Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences official Oscar YouTube page under the video 93rd Oscar Nominations,  Priyanka Chopra Jonas expresses:

“the nominations for ‘Documentary Feature’ goes to Collective, Crip Camp, Time, My Octopus Teacher, and The Mole Agent” (12:1212:38).

Documentary films are incredibly engaging.  Sure, there not a category for everyone.  Especially since documentaries are more based around real events.  Not based around fictional worlds like films usually are.  However, documentaries bring a lot of topics to the table that many audiences may not know about.  Which is where The Academy undoubtedly looks at.  How each documentary presents a topic with different characteristics.  The list this year is incredibly difficult to determine a winner in this category.  Much like the next category, “Documentary Short Subject”.

While On the Subject of Documentary, the Oscar Nominations Reveals Nominations for Documentary Short Subject

While on the topic of documentaries, the next category that games a nomination is “Documentary Short Subject”.  According to The Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences official Oscar YouTube page under the video 93rd Oscar Nominations,  Nick Jonas discusses:

“the nominations for ‘Documentary Short Subject’ goes to Colette, A Love Song for Latasha, Hunger Ward, A Concerto is a Conversation, and Do Not Split” (12:3813:03).

While the previous category discusses a feature film documentary, these films contain subjects that can be covered in a short time.  Within 2020, there were a lot of events that could be made into a documentary.  With the documentary list, there are several documentary short films that bring a lot of discussion.  The Academy has a hard selection ahead to the winner for this category of “Documentary Short Subject”.  With this announcement made, the Oscar Nominations goes into the next category being “Best International Feature Film”.

The Academy Celebrates International Films with the Category Best International Feature Film

Another category that receives a nomination is “Best International Feature Film”.  According to The Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences official Oscar YouTube page under the video 93rd Oscar Nominations, Priyanka Chopra Jonas explains:

“the nominations for ‘Best International Feature Film’ contains Another Round, Quo Vadis, Aida?, Better Days, The Man Who Sold His Skin, and Collective” (13:0313:38).

One of the best things about The Oscars is the inclusion of international films.  These films range in different types of films from live-action to animations.  This year, The Academy handpicks international films that stand out from the rest.  Last year, Parasite won several awards including not only “Best International Feature Film” but also “Best Picture”.  So, don’t discredit international films.  As audiences saw the ultimate winner of the night last year with Parasite.  Plus, having an international film category encourages filmgoers to watch other films.  After the announcement of the “Best International Feature Film”, the next category goes into “Sound”.

Sound is a Category The Academy Celebrates at The Oscars

Then, the Oscar Nomination goes into the category of “Sound”.  According to The Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences official Oscar YouTube page under the video 93rd Oscar Nominations,  Priyanka Chopra Jonas discusses:

“the nominations for ‘Sound’ belongs to Sound of Metal, Greyhound, Soul, Mank, and News of the World” (13:4314:06).

Now, sound is crucial for any film.  As sound design helps establish so many different aspects.  This includes world-building, scenery, characters, and music for instance.   Sound is so important within the context of a film.  In fact, some films rely solely on sound.  One example of a film relying solely on sound is A Quiet Place.  There was little to no talking and sound plays a huge factor in this film.  With that, this selection of films goes deeper into the use of sound.  The Academy looks for how films use sound to better define their film in a number of ways.  Another category that The Academy uses for world-building is “Production Design”.

The Category of Production Design Helps Brings Audiences Into a New World

After the discussion of “Sound”, The Oscar Nomination live stream goes into the category of “Production Design”.  According to The Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences official Oscar YouTube page under the video 93rd Oscar Nominations,  Nick Jonas discusses:

“the nominations for ‘Production Design’ goes to Tenet, The Father, Mank, News of the World, and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” (14:0714:33).

Now then, the “Production Design” category focuses on how a production team designs the background of a film.  So that audience are transported to a new universe.  Whether this new universe be anything from fantasy to a period piece.  Regardless, production design helps establish the setting of the film.  Which is where The Academy looks into is the use of the production design to better set the scene for the world.  This selection of films does this perfectly to engulf the audience into a new world.  Another category that helps tell a film’s story is “Best Film Editing”.

Next, The Oscar Nominations Goes Into the Category of Best Film Editing

Another category that The Academy releases nominations for is “Best Film Editing”.  According to The Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences official Oscar YouTube page under the video 93rd Oscar Nominations,  Priyanka Chopra Jonas explains:

“the nominations for ‘Best Film Editing’ includes The Trial of the Chicago 7, The Father, Sound of Metal, Nomadland, and Promising Young Woman” (14:3415:00).

Editing is a huge category for the film industry.  Especially since films rely on editing aspects in order to create some incredibly powerful moments.  In fact, some of the most memorable moments in cinema history are made through film editing.  So, The Academy pinpoints films that have extraordinary avenues within film editing.  Honestly, this nomination list will be difficult to determine the winner.  With that, the next category the nominations go into is “Cinematography”.

The Academy Reveals the Next Nomination Category in Cinematography

Previously, the Oscar Nominations discusses the nominations of “Best Film Editing”.  Now, The Academy reveals the category of “Cinematography”.  According to The Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences official Oscar YouTube page under the video 93rd Oscar Nominations,  Nick Jonas expresses:

“the nominations for ‘Cinematography’ goes to Judas and the Black Messiah, The Trial of the Chicago 7, News of the World, Mank, and Nomadland” (15:0115:25).

The use of cinematography within films is incredibly important.  As the use of camera angles as well as other aspects helps with telling the story of the film.  Which is one of the reasons why The Academy made a category into The Oscars.  This particular category is another incredibly important aspect of a film.  Without the cinematography, a film would be incredibly boring almost non-existent. It’ll be interesting to see which one of these films will be the ultimate winner.   Another important category that the Oscar Nominations goes into is “Visual Effects”.

Visual Effects Help Transports Audiences into New Lands

Next, we’re going to take a look at the nominations for “Visual Effects”.  According to The Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences official Oscar YouTube page under the video 93rd Oscar Nominations,  Priyanka Chopra Jonas explains:

“the nominations for ‘Visual Effects’ consist of Tenet, Mulan, Love and Monsters, The One and Only Ivan, and The Midnight Sky” (15:2815:51).

Now, visual effects is an incredibly important aspect of filmmaking.  As this process requires multiple people to add in special effects, creature creations, and a whole bunch more.  Visual effects can be an exciting category as this section brings life and power to certain scenes.  Plus, visual effects can help with world-building aspects.   This is why a lot of fantasy films use a lot of visual effects.  This nomination list ranges incredibly well.  It’ll be interesting to see which of these films will be the winner.  Another category the Oscar Nominations delivers is “Best Makeup and Hairstyling”.

The Academy Reveals the Oscar Nomination for Best Makeup and Haircut

Following the reveal of “Visual Effects” category, the next category announcement is “Best Makeup and Hairstyling”.  According to The Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences official Oscar YouTube page under the video 93rd Oscar Nominations,  Nick Jonas discusses:

“the nominations for ‘Best Makeup and Hairstyling’ contains Pinocchio, Mank, Hillbilly Elegy and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” (15:5216:19).

Within film, makeup and hairstyling is vital part of a production team. Much production design as well as the costume design, the makeup and hairstyling team help tell the story.  Also, this department helps establish the universe or possible time period.  For example, Pinocchio is a fantasy film with Pinocchio having wood texture on his face.  As such, the makeup is made to look incredibly realistic.  That’s why this category is so vitally important. As it brings more realism to the films.  The Academy has seen these films as having outstanding makeup and hairstyling.  Another category that The Academy made a fantastic selection is “Animated Film”.

2020 Had Some Fantastic Animated Film

After the reveal of films for “Best Makeup and Hairstyling”, the next category discussion is “Animated Film.  According to The Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences official Oscar YouTube page under the video 93rd Oscar Nominations,  Priyanka Chopra Jonas explains:

“the nominations for ‘Animated Film’ belongs to Onward, Wolfwalker, Over the Moon, Soul, and A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon” (16:2016:53).

Without a doubt, all of these films deserve to be here.  Animation has had its difficulty within The Academy.  For several years, animation has been seen as a children’s medium.  Now, this type of mindset isn’t as much of a factor. As many animation films have become incredibly well known within The Academy.  With that, this set of nominations we have this year shows a wide range of different animation styles.  As many of these films were done remotely due to the coronavirus pandemic.  That said, the final winner will be interesting to see as the race is exceedingly difficult to determine a winner right now.  It’ll be curious to see what happens on April 25, 2021.  After this category reveals, the next category the Oscar Nominations goes into is “Best Original Song”.

The Oscar Nominations Nominates Several Films for Best Original Song

After the category of Animation Film, the next category is “Original Song”.  According to The Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences official Oscar YouTube page under the video 93rd Oscar Nominations,  Nick Jonas discusses:

“the nominations for ‘Original Song’ include Fight for You from Judas and the Black Messiah, Speak Now from One Night in Miami…, Hear My Voice from The Trial of the Chicago 7, IO SÌ (Seen) from The Light Ahead (La Vita Davanti A Se), and Husavik from Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga” (16:5417:28).

Within films, there are certain songs that play a huge part in the story.  Either to help the characters along or to show the growth of the main character.  Regardless, music can use to show the growth of the main character as well as the cast of characters.  With that, the original songs that The Academy gave the nomination to are phenomenal.  These original songs range from all different genres.  Showing the diversity this previous year had.  With this nomination list down, the Oscar Nominations goes into the next category, “Actor in Leading Role”.

This Year’s Actor in Leading Role Category Shows a Wide Cast of Different Actors

The next category this Oscar Nomination goes into is “Actor in a Leading Role”.  According to The Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences official Oscar YouTube page under the video 93rd Oscar Nominations,  Priyanka Chopra Jonas describes:

“the nominations for ‘Actor in a Leading Role’ goes to Riz Ahmed, Steven Yeun, Anthony Hopkins, Chadwick Boseman, and Gary Oldman” (17:3018:00).

The leading role within a film is crucial.  As all eyes are on the main character to tell the story of the film.  With that, all of these actors did a phenomenal job.  Inputting their acting skills to the max in order to convey their character’s emotions, strengths, and weaknesses.  What’s more interesting is the nomination of Chadwick Boseman.  Unfortunately, he passed away in 2020 to his battle with cancer.  Being able to see him having a nomination for one of the last films he did is awesome.  Without a doubt, this list of actors is going to be hard to determine a winner.  Another category that will be hard to determine a winner is the next category, “Actress in a Leading Role”.

Actress in Leading Role Reveals a Strong Cast of Female Actresses

After the announcement of the  “Actor in a Leading Role”, the Oscar Nominations goes into the next category of “Actress in a Leading Role”.  According to The Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences official Oscar YouTube page under the video 93rd Oscar Nominations,  Nick Jonas discusses:

the nominations for ‘Actress in Leading Role’ belong to Viola Davis, Carey Mulligun, Andra Day, Frances McDormand, and Vanessa Kirby” (18:0218:31).

The following actresses have taken the steps to go above and beyond.   The roles that they play don’t feel like actresses playing a character.  In fact, these actresses put so much into their roles that the audience can see these characters come to life.  The Academy agrees also as these actresses put their best acting skills forward.  In order to make these characters come to life.  After the reveal of the “Actress in a Leading Role”, the next category reveals is “Director”.

The Director Category Helps Differentiate the Best Directors of 2020

The next category this Oscar nomination goes into is “Director”.  According to The Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences official Oscar YouTube page under the video 93rd Oscar Nominations, Priyanka Chopra Jonas explains:

“the nominations for ‘Director’ contains of Emerald Fennell for Promising Young Woman, Thomas Vinterberg for Another Round, Lee Isaac Chung for Minari, David Fincher for Mank, and Chloé Zhao for Nomadland” (18:3419:04).

Now, directors are incredibly important during a production.  As the director works with the set of the production team.  Plus, the director works with the producers of the project.  As such, the role of the director is vitally important to the state of a film production.  With these nominations, each one of these directors went above and beyond to ensure that their projects are the best they can be.  With the announcement of the “Director” category, the final announcement is here with “Best Picture”.

Lastly, Let’s Take a Look at the Final Category Announcement for Best Picture

Last but not least, the Oscar Nominations reveals the last category.  Without a doubt, this last category is one of the most important ones.  The final category in The Academy Awards is “Best Picture”.  According to The Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences official Oscar YouTube page under the video 93rd Oscar Nominations,  Nick Jonas, as well as Priyanka Chopra Jonas, discusses:

“the nominations for ‘Best Picture’ goes to The Father, The Trial of the Chicago 7, Nomadland, Sound of Metal, Mank, Judas and the Black Messiah, Promising Young Woman, and Sound of Metal ” (19:0520:24).

This selection shows the best of the best films within 2020.  These films have a strong stance in all of the categories within The Oscars.  There’s a lot of films that have to fight for the Oscar Nomination of “Best Picture”.  However, The Academy looks at all of the aspects of different films.  The ones that make the selection go above and beyond to be outstanding pieces of work.  Which is exactly what each of these nominations do.
