With COVID-19, the Entertainment Industry has Taken a Huge Hit

Picture this for a moment. What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word, movie theater? Usually, movie theaters are incredibly fun places to watch new as well as old films.  A place for individuals to escape for a few hours from the world.  In fact, movie theaters were ways people could get news before the days of television.  Regardless, movie theaters are an exciting outing and experience.  Even with the change of streaming services, movie audiences still go to theaters.  However, everything is changing with the COVID-19 pandemic.  With the infection growing to thousands of people, businesses are having to shut down.  Additionally, workers are either getting laid off or hours getting cut.  Businesses have been opening back up.  With the CDC otherwise known as the Center for Disease Control guidelines to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

Yet, some businesses have to open. One of these fields is the entertainment industry.  Especially when it comes to movie theaters.  Movie theaters have completely shut down.  Until either new harsher guidelines are made, or a vaccine is made.  Since it’s incredibly hard to social distance in a movie theater environment.  With movie theaters completely shut down, the entertainment industry is in a standstill.  Do they make the transition to streaming services like Hulu, Netflix, or Amazon Prime? Some companies like the Walt Disney Company and Universal Studios have completely made the transition to online services.  Even with this, many production companies in the entertainment industry want to save movie theaters.  However, what is the entertainment industry doing to save movie theaters? Let’s find out together. In this article, we’re examining how the entertainment industry is saving movie theaters while the world is under the COVID-19 pandemic.

Production Companies in the Entertainment Industry are Creating Fundraisers

One of the things that the entertainment industry is doing to save movie theaters is conducting fundraisers.  Some of these fundraisers are to send viewers to organizations to help individuals in the entertainment industry.  According to Deadline’s official website under the article, “Lionsgate Teams With Fandango, YouTube, & NATO To Help Furloughed Cinema Employees With ‘Lionsgate Live!’”, Anthony D’Alessandro who’s the Editorial Director of Deadline states that “Lionsgate is doing watch-along to assist movie theaters with donations” (3).  Essentially, these watch-along help organizations that offer programs to movie theaters.  This includes the movie theaters themselves and the workers for those establishments.  Undoubtedly, this is a huge help for movie theaters.  Many individuals forget that movie theaters are a part of the entertainment industry.  They’re the ones that distribute films from the production companies.

What is also happening is NATO otherwise known as the National Association of Theatre Owners has been pushing for support as well.  According to the official National Association of Theatre Owner’s website under the statement, “NATO Urges Congress to Pass RESTART Act to Save Local Movie Theaters”, The National Association of Theatre Owners explains that “movie theaters need assistant during these challenging times to save the integrity of the entertainment industry” (1). What this means is that movie theaters are asking for financial help from the government.  Especially since no one can look into the future on how the coronavirus will change.  Being able to have this push for financial stability is huge.  While the entertainment industry is creating fundraisers, movie theaters are working on getting new as well as old films to return to theaters.

At the Same Time, Old and New Films are Coming to Movie Theaters

The entertainment industry is bringing films to movie theaters.  Which includes both old and new films.  Typically, this would be normal with movie theaters.  Both old and new films would make their rounds around movie theaters.  However, streaming services have made film experiences different.  Several companies including the Walt Disney Company and Universal Studios have made the transition to online films.  Particularly with the Walt Disney Company with Disney Plus.  In fact, the live-action version of Mulan is now coming to Disney Plus. Instead of going into the movie theaters.  This notion has hurt a lot of theaters.  Especially since Mulan is one of the Disney films most audiences are excited about.  With that said, several production companies are promising that films will be release in theaters.

According to ScreenDaily’s official website under the article, “WarnerMedia Head Declares Support for Theatrical, Forecasts Shorter Windows”, Jeremy Kay who’s one of ScreenDaily’s editors, states the fact that “production companies like WarnerMedia will be bringing out new films just like before” (2).  This means that production companies like WarnerMedia want to release films in movie theaters.  With this news, this means that there’s still a push for movie theater support.  While new films are coming, older films are coming back.  To bring viewers back, movie theaters are playing memorable films to captivate audiences.  In fact, some movie theaters are doing special offers to welcome back people to the movie theaters.  So, make sure to go and support local theaters to ensure they’re around for a long time.  With new and old content still coming to theaters, audiences will still come to theaters in the future.

The Entertainment Industry Must Come Together to Save Movie Theaters for the Future

In this news article, we have thoroughly analyze how the entertainment industry is trying to save movie theaters.  Firstly, we took a look at how production companies are doing fundraisers.  These fundraisers are done through watch-along and awareness.  Being able to help movie theaters during these uncertain times is important.  Especially with the situation, everyone is in with the unseizable future.  Another thing we took a look at is how movie theaters are working on getting both new as well as old films to their establishments.  Production companies still see the importance of movie theaters.  Even with the push of streaming services like Hulu, Netflix, and Disney Plus.  Additionally, movie theaters are bringing back viewers with older films.  To show once again the magic and charisma movie theaters have to offer.

With everything that has happen, it’s unfortunate that an industry that creates memories is suffering.  However, with everything the entertainment industry is doing, movie theaters wouldn’t be going anywhere.
