The Pokémon Company Thriving After the Release of Pokémon Sword and Shield
Since the release of Pokémon Sword and Shield, Pokémon has become incredibly popular. Especially since this game is the franchise’s first jump into not only a home console but into 3D animation. Various type of Pokémon players have made a return because of Pokémon Sword and Shield. Everyone from veteran players all the way to players who’s first game was Pokémon Let’s Go. Even without Pokémon Sword and Shield, the Pokémon Company is thriving right now. With the release of not only Pokémon Masters but also massive updates to Pokémon GO. At the current moment, there’s no better time to be a Pokémon fan. Recently, many fans have becoming closer to completing the Pokédex as well as running out of spots in their PC. This is due to the fact that GameFreak’s Pokémon Home hasn’t had a release date yet since the original announcement.
On January 9, 2020, the Pokémon Company did a livestream press conference. This press conference is a Pokémon Direct. Unsurprisingly, the announcement of a Pokémon Direct is an exciting time. If directs are on one specific franchise, then the whole direct will focus only on that franchise. With that in mind, GameFreak as well as the Pokémon Company came into this Pokémon Direct with bombshell news. Rest assure, this press conference brings significant changes to the Pokémon community. Let’s examine what GameFreak as well as the Pokémon Company reveals. In this review, we’ll be analyzing the Pokémon Direct by thoroughly examining the new games, expansion pass, new DLC and Pokémon Home.
Pokémon Direct Reveals a Remaster Through Mystery Dungeon Rescue Team DX
One of the first news that this Pokémon Direct reveals is Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX. Honestly, this reveal is surprising since not a lot of news has been on the Mystery Dungeon series. At the same time, this new game is a wonderful way to get Pokémon players into the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series. Non-mainstream Pokémon games have become more prevalent throughout the years. Some non-mainstream Pokémon games include Pokémon Shuffle, Pokémon Snap, and Pokémon Colosseum for instance. Pokémon Mystery Dungeon has a very strong following as it’s been a non-mainstream Pokémon game series since the GameBoy Advance. As a result, many non-Pokémon Mystery Dungeon players don’t really know where to start in the series. Rest assure, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX brings the first two games within the Mystery Dungeon series.
The art style of this game looks incredible. This game contains a watercolor in addition to a soft tone coloration. From what we see within the direct, the gameplay makes this game very enjoyable to see. Honestly, this game reminds me of a Kirby or a Yoshi game for that matter just by the way the direct shows the audience. Unquestionably, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX will bring many players into the Mystery Dungeon series. Just as the Pokémon Company drops a new Mystery Dungeon game, Gamefreak drops an even bigger bombshell regarding Pokémon Sword and Shield expansion passes.
GameFreak Drops a Bombshell of News Regarding Pokémon Sword and Shield Expansion Passes
Without a doubt, the Pokémon Direct more specifically GameFreak reveals a massive bombshell of information. There’s no surprise that Pokémon Sword and Shield has been incredibly successful. This game introduces several new mechanics including max raid battles and The Wild Area. The hype for Pokémon Sword and Shield is continuing to go strong. With this new Pokémon Direct, GameFreak reveals the introduction of the Pokémon Sword and Shield expansion pass. Having this new piece of news is absolutely huge. Above all, this news will bring downloadable content also known as DLC to Pokémon Sword and Shield. For years, fans have been telling GameFreak to create story driven DLC. More specifically, additional stories for legendary Pokémon. Fear not, because GameFreak defiantly delivers on what is coming within the expansion pass. Within this direct, GameFreak introduces audiences to the Isle of Armor as well as The Crown of Tundra.
Explore the Isle of Armor in Pokémon Sword and Shield
The Pokémon Sword and Shield Expansion Passes currently have a two-part additional story. Part one is name The Isle of Armor. From what we see from both the Pokémon direct as well as the official Pokémon website, the Isle of Armor is a new part of the Galarian region. On Pokémon official website under the article name “The Settings of Your New Adventures”, the Isle of Armor has “much brighter colors as well as veteran Pokémon flying overhead” (3). One of the things that is very appealing about this concept art is the beaches. Furthermore, players have the opportunity to experience a brand-new area for the Galar region. Nevertheless, within the concept art that the audience sees, there are various caves. Which means the opportunity for new as well as returning Pokémon. The discussion of new as well as returning Pokémon will be later within the article.
With all of the beaches, the amount of water type Pokémon will be immensely large. Additionally, the use of the update Rotom bike will be very beneficial within this new region. One of the other Pokémon that will more than likely make more of an appearance is grass as well as fire type. This part one of the expansion passes will no doubt be fun as well as bring so many hours of gameplay to Pokémon Sword and Shield. While The Isle of Armor is colorful as well as bright, The Crown Tundra changes one hundred and eighty degrees of cold weather.
Pokémon Direct Announces The Crown Tundra
Much like the Isle of Armor, The Crown Tundra is a completely new part of the Galar region. The part two of the new story is within a new section name The Crown Tundra. Unlike the Isle of Armor, The Crown Tundra is a cold, snowy part of Galar. On the Pokémon official website under the article name “The Settings of Your New Adventure, the official artwork “shows this part of Galar as much harsher as well as darker coloration” (4). From what we see, this part of Galar will undoubtedly have ice type Pokémon. Honestly, this part of Galar reminds me of the road to Wyndon. Does this mean that The Crown Tundra is going to be apart of Route 10? The Pokémon Direct didn’t have a whole lot of information regarding The Crown Tundra.
With that said, players did get a confirmation that this area will not only have more never before seen Pokémon. Additionally, this new part of the region will integrate legendary Pokémon within raid battles. Rest assure, we will discuss the return of the integration of legendary Pokémon. Many fans became ecstatic when the direct reveals the introduction of legendary raid battles. Without a doubt, The Crown Tundra will bring countless new hours within the already vast game life of Pokémon Sword and Shield. As the Pokémon Direct reveals the two new story additions, veteran as well as new Pokémon became the center of the expansion pass.
Gamefreak Returns Pokémon into the National Pokédex
Within the Pokémon Direct, one of the major pieces of information the audience receives is the introduction of returning Pokémon. In a previous part of this review, we did a discussion regarding Pokémon Home. Up to this point, players were assuming that all of the Pokémon we were getting were the only ones that are currently in the game. When the direct reveals the expansion pass, the audience can see several previous generation Pokémon. On Nintendo’s official YouTube page on the video name under the title “Pokémon Direct 1.9.2020”, the audiences can see that “within the direct, certain returning Pokémon appear including Kingdra, Volcarona, Lycanroc, and Dedenne” (5:36 – 5:39). Being able to see that Pokémon are slowly returning is incredibly exciting. In fact, this revelation can be a huge gate for other Pokémon to come into this game even into future games.
Obviously, not all of the Pokémon are going to make it into Pokémon Sword and Shield. Regardless, introducing previous generation Pokémon in small increments will make it so that GameFreak will be able to make more character models. This isn’t to say that it’s guaranteed that every single Pokémon may appear within this Pokémon game. However, being able to implement different character animations as well as character models will help future games. Just as we see return Pokémon, this Pokémon Direct also includes new Pokémon including Galarian Slowpoke, Kubfu, Urshifu, and Calyrex.
Galarian Slowpoke Crawls Itself into Pokémon Sword and Shield
Just like the returning Pokémon, the expansion pass stories is giving players new Pokémon. One of them is the always adorable yet derpy Pokémon, Galarian Slowpoke. From what the direct shows the audience, the Galarian Slowpoke is significantly different from the original Slowpoke. Typically, Slowpoke is a water and psychic type Pokémon. Galarian Slowpoke on the other hand is a different typing. On the Pokémon official website under the article, “Galarian Slowpoke”, the Pokémon Company reveals that “unlike a regular Slowpoke, Galarian Slowpoke is a psychic type Pokémon” (3). This means that the water typing is taken away giving Galarian Slowpoke less weaknesses. What’s more is that Galarian Slowpoke’s coloration is different. Instead of being a pure pink coloration, there’s a yellow shade on its head as well as it’s tail. When the direct reveals this new Galarian Pokémon, this brings up the idea that newer Pokémon are coming.
If more Pokémon are coming to these games, then this means that players will spend more time trying to capture and train there new Pokémon. Additionally, this also raises questions about if more Galarian forms are going to expose themselves. Hopefully, GameFreak will keep the Pokémon within the expansion pass a secret much like the leading up release to Pokémon Sword and Shield. This is because many players including me could feel a sense of wonder about the new Pokémon. As the Pokémon Direct reveals Galarian Slowpoke, the direct also reveals a new legendary Pokémon name Kubfu.
GameFreak Reveals a New Fighting Pokémon name Kubfu
Within this Pokémon Direct, GameFreak reveals a legendary Pokemon that will be helping players along for the journey in the Isle of Armor. This Pokémon’s name is Kubfu. Kubfu is a fighting type anthropomorphic bear. One of the unique tactics that Kubfu has is that this legendary Pokémon evolves. It’s uncommon for legendary Pokémon to evolve. With that said, Kubfu changes the status-quo. There’s nothing wrong with this factor. In fact, having a legendary Pokémon that changes the status-quo is good for mixing up the play-through of the games. Undoubtedly, players will use this Pokemon within their play-through of the Isle of Armor. One of the factors that’s intriguing is if the players can bring there previous team into the Isle of Armor. However, the way this story is structuring itself, GameFreak is strongly encouraging players to use Kubfu on there team. Honestly, this wouldn’t be a problem.
From what we see within the direct, Gamefreak reveals not only Kubfu but also returning Pokémon. If anything, this new story encourages players to create completely new teams. Not only this but Kubfu evolves into two different Pokémon. Currently, we don’t know how these Pokémon will evolve nor what level. However, Kubfu’s evolutions are Urshifu Single Strike Style as well as Urshifu Rapid Strike Style.
Kubfu Evolves into the First Form Urshifu (Single Strike Style)
The first evolutionary form of Kubfu is Urshifu Single Strike Style. On the official Pokémon website under the article name “Urshifu”, the Pokémon Company reveals that “Urshifu Single Strike Style is a unique typing of fighting and dark” (3). Not a lot of Pokémon have this typing which will no doubt make for an interesting playthrough. Especially with the new rivals within The Isle of Armor. Rest assure, we’ll examine those rivals later within the review. Anyway, Urshifu Single Strike Style Granted, there are Pokémon like Scrafty as well as Pangoro that have this typing. However, there’s not a lot of fighting and dark type Pokémon which will make playing through The Isle of Armor very interesting. Currently, we don’t know a lot of information regarding Urshifu Single Strike Style. This Pokémon looks like a physical heavy attacker which could possibly mean high stats in HP, Attack, and Defense.
It’ll be interesting in the months to come to hear more information regarding this evolve form of Kubfu. Additionally, we’ll get to hear more information regarding the second evolve form of Kubfu. This Pokémon’s name is Urshifu Rapid Striking Style.
The Second Urshifu Form (Rapid Strike Style) Shows More Fluid Motions
The second evolution form of Kubfu is Urshifu Rapid Striking Style. On the official Nintendo YouTube channel under the video name “Pokémon Direct 1.9.2020”, GameFreak reveals that “Urshifu Rapid Strike Style is the unheard of typing Fighting and Water type” (11:45). Not only is this typing super rare, but this Pokémon typing will be without a doubt super fun to use. The only other Pokémon that has this typing is the legendary Pokemon, Keldeo. At one point, Keldo was a consistent competitive battler within competitive battling. With that said, Urshifu Rapid Striking Style has a lot of praise going for it from the beginning. Much like Urshifu Single Striking Style, we don’t have a lot of information regarding this evolution. Regardless, we can look at the design in order to get an idea of the potential of Urshifu Rapid Striking Style.
From what the audiences sees within the direct, this version of Urshifu is more fluid than the Single Strike. Almost like this type of Urshifu focuses on another type of martial arts. Which would make sense since all of the Pokémon in this evolutionary line is fighting. In terms of stats, Rapid Striking Style will likely be in Defense, HP, and Special Defense. The reason for this is because generally, water types are bulker than other Pokémon. Without a doubt, GameFreak will reveal more information regarding this Pokémon in the recent months. Much like the changes of the Pokémon formula that Urshifu brings, another Pokémon name Calyrex will bring more power to Galar.
Pokémon Direct Reveals the Royal King Pokémon, Calyrex
Recently, we’ve been analyzing a lot of information regarding the Isle of Armor. In this case, we’ll be looking into a legendary Pokémon that will be in the second part of the expansion pass. This Pokémon within The Crown Tundra is Calyrex. From what we see within both the direct as well as the official Pokémon website, Calyrex is also a unique typing of Grass and Psychic. Much like Urshifu Rapid Striking Style, Calyrex has a typing that only one Pokémon has which is another legendary Pokémon. From what we see in the design of this Pokémon, Calyrex looks like a Rabbit with long legs and has a dark green, bulb on its head. From a first look, this Pokémon has an incredibly regal presence. Additionally, Calyrex looks like an incredibly powerful Pokémon. Due to this Pokémon’s typing, there’s no doubt that Calyrex will have a huge Special Attack stat.
If this Pokémon isn’t on the automatic ban list, Calyrex will more than likely be on teams during the meta game of Pokémon Sword and Shield. On the other hand, GameFreak has been trying to focus the competitive battling on non-legendary as well as non-Gigantamax forms. Still, hopefully GameFreak will reveal some more information regarding more about Calyrex. Calyrex isn’t the only legendary Pokémon appearing in The Crown Tundra as a new co-op mode reveals the return of the integration of legendary Pokémon.
Pokémon Direct Reveals the Epic Return of Integrating Legendary Pokemon
Within the most recent years, legendary Pokémon have become a part of a joke. More specifically, legendary Pokémon are more or less given to players. Within previous games like Pokémon Heart Gold and Soul Silver, players had an expectation to find a special item. Once a player finds this item, they then get the chance to fight a legendary Pokémon. With this Pokémon Direct, players can now rejoice at the reintroduction of the integration of Legendary Pokémon. According the Pokémon Direct on Nintendo’s official YouTube video under the name “Pokémon Direct 1.9.2020”, GameFreak reveals that “players will be able to challenge various legendary Pokémon in max raid battles” (14:58 – 15:04). Essentially, this co-op is The Wild Area Raid arenas but with legendary Pokémon. At the same time with trainers being able to battle previous legendary Pokémon, new legendary Pokémon are appearing in the Galar region.
Within the Pokémon Direct montage, the audiences gets to see various new legendary Pokémon. Two of which look like new Regi forms. At the same time, the audience also gets a glimpse into a possible regional variance of the legendary birds from Kanto.
Pokémon Direct Reveals the Possibility of Two New Regi Pokémon
Surprisingly, the Regi are making an appearance within The Crown Tundra. From what we can see in the direct, there are two Regis that are within the montage. Firstly, let’s look at the electric Regi. One of the things that sticks out instantly about this Pokémon is the design. Clearly, this Pokémon is an inspiration of its typing. Typically, this is a trait with the Regis. The coloring also reflects off very well. The blue rings significantly pops on the contrast of the yellow. Which is completely different from the other new Regi.
The second Regi that this direct introduces is much darker. From what we see in the direct, this Regi more than likely is a dragon type. At the same time, this new Regi could possibly be a dark type due to the coloration. Regardless, the colors of the second Regi counter each other very well. Unfortunately, GameFreak nor the Pokémon Company made any comment about these two new Regis within this direct. However, there’s still plenty of time for information at another time. The other set of legendary Pokémon to receive a change is the legendary birds from Kanto.
Kanto’s Legendary Birds Receive a Possible Variant Form Within Galar
One of the things that no one was expecting was a change to the legendary birds from Kanto. Just as a little refresher, the legendary birds of Kanto are Articuno, Moltres, and Zapdos. Each one of them represents a different elemental type. Now to be clear, we don’t know for sure how these new changes occur. Regardless, each one of the changes to the iconic trio is spectacular. Firstly, I have to say that this new Articuno’s design is amazing. Simply adding new details like a new mask as well as coloration makes this new regional variance of Articuno phenomenal.
The same can be said about Zapdos. The fact that this Pokémon looks even more intimidating than its previous form. Interestingly enough, Zapdos’s legs look longer than its wings. If so, Zapdos would be the coolest land running bird the Pokémon universe will ever see. What will be interesting is to find out if this version of Zapdos will still be Flying/Electric? Last but not least, we have Moltres. Easily without a doubt, Moltres’s new form is the best. The design of it with the black body with red flames makes it look like a beast. Does this mean that Moltres will get a new typing of Dark and Fire? With that in mind, many players will be able to look forward to news regarding these legendary birds. While the Kanto legendaries are getting changes, there are several new Pokémon that are receiving new Gigantamax forms.
The New Pokémon Direct Reveals New Gigantamax Pokémon
Throughout Pokémon Sword and Shield, one of the things that is consistently happening is players helping each other get Gigantamax Pokémon. Primarily, this is done through max raid battles. With this new concept, players either join forces with other players as well as non-playable characters also known as NPCs. Undoubtedly, max raid battles has defiantly brought the Pokémon community together as we fight to attempt to catch an incredibly powerful Pokémon. With Gigantamax Pokémon, some of them are harder to find than others. This new Pokémon Direct reveals that some Pokémon are getting new Gigantamax forms. Some of the Pokémon that GameFreak reveals are getting new Gigantamax forms are Inteleon, Rillaboom, Cinderace, Venusaur, Blastoise, and Urshifu. These announcements will bring significant changes to the Pokémon meta game for sure.
Gigantamax Inteleon is Ready to Snipes Out the Competition Within the Pokémon Direct
Let’s take a look at Gigantamax Inteleon. What’s interesting about Gigantamax Inteleon is that this form takes full advantages of its spy theme. From what we see within the Pokémon Direct, Gigantamax Inteleon is standing on its tail. On top of that, Inteleon has a sniper aiming at the ground. Without question, Gigantamax Inteleon has a super fun design. One of the factors that is intriguing is will players be able to Gigantamax their own partner Pokémon. Since this Pokémon is a player’s very first, it would make sense that the starter would have the ability to Gigantamax. More than likely, the other Galarian starters will be catchable through The Wild Area. Anyway, it’s fascinating how Gigantamax Inteleon’s tail towers over everyone else. Since Inteleon is a starter, does this mean that the starters have a chance of getting their own signature G-Max move? Honestly, this would make sense.
Especially with Inteleon with its large sniper. Being able to use a special water G-Max move with a large critical hit ratio. That would be incredibly awesome if GameFreak interwoven that into each of the Gigantamax Galarian forms. Just as Gigantamax Inteleon holds onto its design, the same can be said for Gigantamax Rillaboom.
Gigantamax Rillaboom Rocks and Rolls Into Battle
The next Pokémon that the Pokémon Direct reveals is Gigantamax Rillaboom. Gamefreak reveals within the Pokémon Direct that Rillaboom not only grows larger but combines its branches to the drum. In order to rock out the competition. All joking aside, Gigantamax Rillaboom enhances Rillaboom coolness. Within the Pokémon community, not a lot of players care for Grookey. By no means is anything wrong with Grookey. Nor is anyone who love Grookey as a starter. Everyone is given the opportunity to choose their first starter. In spite of this, players generally choose Sobble or Scorbunny over Grookey. With that said, this Gigantamax form gives players a chance to check out how powerful Rillaboom can be. Especially if each Gigantamax starter has their own special move. This certainly means that Rillaboom’s drum will be apart of its signature move.
No doubt that this signature move will be a grass type move. With that in mind, perhaps GameFreak can change the move’s effects. To when Gigantamax Rillaboom uses its signature move and confuses all of the opponent’s Pokémon since the drum is massive. This would make a ton of sense as well as create for some extremely fun battles. Surely, GameFreak will think of a tactic to make Gigantamax Rillaboom the best it can be. Just like the final Galarian starter Gigantamax form, Gigantamax Cinderace.
Gigantamax Cinderace Frying the Competition Away within Pokémon Sword and Shield
Finally, the last Galarian starter we’re going to be discussing is Gigantamax Cinderace. Within every Pokémon game, there’s always one starter that players generally enjoy the most. With generation eight, many players made the selection of Scorbunny. As a result, Cinderace has become an incredibly viable Pokémon. In fact, on Nintendo’s official YouTube channel under the video name :Pokémon Direct 1.9.2020, the audience clearly sees “a gigantic fireball with Cinderace controlling the ball of fire” (5:55). More importantly, Gigantamax Cinderace isn’t messing around. Everything about this Gigantamax is absolutely gorgeous. The design is top notch because it makes Cinderace look even more intimidating. Additionally, the way that Gigantamax Cinderace casually stands a large ball of fire. Again, this is a perfect opportunity for GameFreak to create signature moves for each Galarian starter.
With that huge fireball, Cinderace can easily take out so many opponents. Perhaps even putting on a burn effect to opponents on the other side of the field. Having this effect would be incredibly fun for battles for strategies. Maybe even as a hidden ability give it flame body. Let’s be honest here, if anyone were to touch Gigantamax Cinderace, they would immediately burn. With all the jokes out of the way, a hidden ability or even an effect of a move where the Pokémon burns if hit. Much like Toucannon with Beak Blast. These three Galarian starters received their own Gigantamax forms is incredibly exciting. What’s even more exciting is the reveal of Venusaur as well as Blastoise getting their own Gigantamax forms.
The O.G. Plant Dinosaur Pokemon Venusaur Receives a Gigantamax Form
Within this Pokémon Direct, GameFreak reveals that both Venusaur as well as Blastoise are receiving Gigantamax forms. Honestly, this is a huge piece of news. Due to the fact that the other Kanto starters receive acknowledgement from GameFreak. Firstly, let’s take a deeper look at Gigantamax Venusaur. On the Nintendo’s official YouTube channel under the video name “Pokémon Direct 1.9.2020.”, the video montage shows “a brief image of a largely, engulf flowering Gigantamax Venusaur” (5:42.). Gigantamax Venusaur’s bulb is completely in bloom with the pink flower overshadowing this Pokémon. Out of the different Kanto starter Gigantamax forms, Venusaur has the more intriguing design. Also, it feels so good to see Venusaur make it into the expansion pass. Previously, the last few section did a discussion about signature moves. Again, GameFreak has a chance to create a phenomenal Gigantamax Pokémon.
Ideally, the G-Max move will be a grass type move. Perhaps this move could use inspiration to Solarbeam. On the other hand, perhaps Gigantamax Venusaur should have an effect base on it’s G-max move. The design of Gigantamax Venusaur is insanely well done. Just as Gigantamax Venusaur is amazing, Gigantamax Blastoise brings so much power to the Gigantamax family.
Everyone’s Favorite Water Cannon, Tortoise Blastoise is Also Receiving a Gigantamax Form
Just like Venusaur, Blastoise has also been given a chance with Gigantamax Blastoise. From what we see within the Pokémon Direct on Nintendo’s official YouTube channel, “Gigantamax Blastoise gains many more water cannons on its back” (5:44). Much like Coalossal does in its own Gigantamax form for example. Undoubtably, those extra cannons are there to make Gigantamax Blastoise even more intimidating. To be honest, the extra cannons show off the potential power for this Pokémon. Especially with that mega cannon on the top of the shell. Which is incredibly similar to Alolan Golem with its electric cannon. With that said, the design of Gigantamax Blastoise flows incredibly well.
For a potential signature move, being able to shoot a massive water attack from the top of the shell for catastrophic damage. Maybe even with the ability to burn or paralyze with the force of the water. That would be incredibly interesting if effects are put into effect with that glass cannon. Just as Blastoise shows off its Gigantamax form, Urshifu is the final Pokémon within this direct to obtain two different Gigantamax forms.
The New Pokémon Urshifu Gets Two Gigantamax Forms For Each Style
Much like the Kanto starters, Urshifu is receiving two Gigantamax forms for each of its forms. On Nintendo’s official YouTube page under the video name “Pokémon Direct 1.9.2020”, GameFreak reveals about Urshifu’s Gigantamax forms that “each one will be incredibly powerful with its own Gigantamax form” (11:50 – 12:06). These forms will bring their own power with a new Gigantamax form. Firstly, Urshifu Single Strike Style Gigantamax form looks incredibly angry and ready to attack. The color palate changes completely from a black, white, grew, and yellow to striking white with red highlights. The yellow remains on its muzzle. One of the things that will be without a doubt powerful is its G-Max move. Undoubtably, this move will be one of the most powerful fighting type moves.
Additionally, Urshifu Rapid Striking Style will receive its own Gigantamax form. In fact, Urshifu Rapid Striking Style has polar colors to Single Striking form. Instead of the red coloration, Rapid Striking Style has blue. With that said, Rapid Striking Style still contains its fluid fighting style. Now, what will be interesting is finding out what Urshifu’s Rapid Striking Style G-Max move will be. Granted, there are special attacking fighting type moves like Aura Sphere. Without a doubt, this new move will be the most powerful special attacking fighting move than Final Gambit. Who knows what these new Gigantamax forms will bring to the meta game. With the release of these new Gigantamax forms, the Pokémon Company reveals that new characters are coming to Galar.
New Characters Reveal within the Pokémon Direct for DLC
No Pokémon game is complete without a cast of characters. Generally, Pokémon games have a diverse range of characters including rivals, professor, and evil team for instance. Granted, there have been characters within the Pokémon games that haven’t been the best. Characters like Shauna, Tierno, and Trevor are characters that don’t provide a challenge. Mainly, the point of the characters is to help immerse the players within the region in addition to the universe. With Pokémon Sword and Shield, the Galar region offers a huge range of different characters. There’s everything from the compelling champion, Leon to charming yet sly character of Chairman Rose. Without a doubt, the cast of characters within this recent generation have been a rapid change of pace. With the reveal of the Expansion Passes, there’s going to be two new stories within the Galar region.
As a result, this means that the players will be able to meet new characters. Whenever GameFreak reveals new characters, excitement can be seen from the players. Especially with the new cast of characters within Pokémon Sword and Shield. With that said, this Pokémon Direct reveals three new characters. These characters include Mustard, Klara, and Avery.
The Master Mustard Assists Players Within The Isle of Armor
This Pokémon Direct explains that new characters are coming to Pokémon Sword and Shield. Including a new mentor character name Mustard who is within The Isle of Armor. On the official Pokémon website under the article name, “The Cast of Characters”, the Pokémon Company explains that “this character will be there to help you along your journey around The Isle of Armor” (5). Essentially, Mustard will guide players within The Isle of Armor to become stronger. From what we see in his character, Mustard’s design is incredibly charming. Mustard looks like an older man with a heart of gold as well as a fighting spirit. It wouldn’t be surprising if Mustard is the last person players fight at the end of this adventure. Much like Professor Kukui is the final fight in Pokémon Sun and Moon.
In fact, this factor could play an homage to Professor Oak in the Kanto region. Since Samuel Oak was at one point the champion of the Pokémon League in Kanto. Originally, Professor Oak had an incredibly powerful team which the player would have to fight. With Mustard, seeing this character grow only to have to fight him in the end would be incredibly satisfying. In terms of his team, he might favor fighting type Pokémon just base on his clothing. His clothing has a three-finger paw print which could be a fighting Pokémon like Riolu for instance. Undoubtedly, more information will release soon regarding Mustard. While GameFreak introduces Mustard, the Pokémon Direct reveals another rival name Klara.
New Rival Arrives in Pokémon Sword name Klara
Within The Isle of Armor, players will get a new rival exclusive to Pokémon Sword. This new rival’s name is Klara. At a first glance, Klara’s design is very similar to Shinobu from Demon Slayer. In fact, according to the official Pokémon website under the article name “The Cast of Characters”, the Pokémon Company expresses the fact that “Klara is a unique trainer for her interest in Poison type Pokémon” (7). The fact that a rival focuses on one element that evil organizations throughout Pokémon primarily use is intriguing. To be honest, Klara’s design is also an inspiration to her typing specialty. Mixing her design with various colors including both light and dark creates a equilibrium. Not at one point does it feel like Klara’s design is too over the top. What will become interesting is the type of Pokémon she’ll have on her team.
Without a doubt, Klara will have primarily poison type Pokémon. However, will GameFreak mix up the stereotype of poison type trainers consistently using the same Pokemon. To be fair, the poison type has a wide range of different Pokémon to choose from to place on her team. Hopefully, GameFreak will present more information shortly about this adorable new rival. Just as Pokémon Sword has a new rival, so does Pokémon Shield with a psychic trainer name Avery.
New Pokémon Direct Reveals New Pokémon Shield Rival Name Avery
One of the new rivals that the Pokémon Direct reveals within the new Expansion Pass is Avery. Much like Klara, Avery is also exclusive to one Pokémon version. With that said, Avery is specifically within Pokémon Shield. Being able to have variety between the two game gives players the opportunity to have different experiences. Which is typically what Pokémon brings to each game variances. On Nintendo’s official YouTube channel under the video name “Pokémon Direct 1.9.2020”, Hiroyuki Tani who’s the director of the Expansion Passes explains that “Avery’s team focuses on the psychic type Pokémon” (10:51). Within the Pokémon universe, psychic type Pokémon tend to be very strong. With this information, this means that Avery will be a challenging rival. Especially with the players having Urshifu within their parties.
To be honest, Avery could quite possibly become the Psychic trainer Bede could have been before Opal took him under her wing. One of the things that is unique about Avery is his design. Without a doubt, Avery’s design is an inspiration of the typical psychic trainer. As many players notices, the new rival has Pokéballs swirling around his hat. On top of that, Avery has the color themes similar to psychic type Pokémon. The lively character design of both Avery as well as Klara will bring tons of excitement to the Pokémon Community. Much like the announcement of the two new rivals, this Pokémon Direct reveals some information regarding Pokémon Home.
The Last Piece of News the Pokémon Direct Reveals is Pokémon Home
Last but not least, this Pokémon Direct reveals a release date for Pokémon Home. To be fair, GameFreak nor the Pokémon Company have publicly made an announcement about the official day of release. From the very beginning, Pokémon Home made a wide division within the Pokémon community. Granted, this wasn’t the only problem that fans became angry about. Fans became angry when GameFreak publicly made an announcement that not all of the Pokémon would be brought into Pokémon Sword and Shield. Honestly, this both bad as well as good. Firstly, let’s start with why this rule is negative. With this rule, certain Pokémon cannot transfer over. For shiny hunters as well as competitive players, this rule is infuriating. Some players spend hundreds if not thousands of hours on Pokémon games. As a result, not being able to transfer shiny as well as competitive Pokémon makes a lot of players angry.
With this said, there are some positives to Pokémon Home. Seeing that Pokémon Home will be a cloud service, players will be able to free up PC space in Pokémon Sword and Shield. As of right now, the PC storage space maximum boxes is only thirty-four boxes. When players start trading, breeding, and catching, these boxes fill up incredibly fast. While certain Pokémon won’t be able to make it onto the game, Pokémon Home will be able to bring more optimal space to the Pokémon PC. Within the Pokémon Direct, Junichi Masuda who’s the producer of Pokémon Sword and Shield explains that “Pokémon Home will receive more information at a later date” (17:50).
