The Time of E3 is Upon Us
Within the summertime, there’s a lot of different events to look forward to. For people who love video games, there’s one event that every gamer looks forward to. This event’s name is E3. E3 is an industry press conference where video game developers from Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo reveal games. Especially, since these games are developer’s income for the next few years. However, for E3 2019, Sony didn’t make an appearance this year. This is unusual because all of the companies show something for E3. On June 11, 2019, Nintendo came front and center with their E3 presentation. Without a doubt, Nintendo’s E3 Direct is by far the best press conference. In this review, we’re going to dive deeper into each game that this Nintendo Direct reveals and how Nintendo creates an impact within E3 2019.
A New Hero Appears in Super Smash Brothers Ultimate
The first thing that Nintendo reveals is Downloadable Content for Super Smash Brothers Ultimate. From the beginning, Super Smash Brothers Ultimate always has a large audience. So, this isn’t a surprise that Nintendo decides to release a new character. However, fans weren’t expecting The Hero from Dragon Quest. The Hero is a character that many people in Japan would know. Especially, since Dragon Quest has only been an exclusive Japanese game. From what we see in the Direct, The Hero looks diverse. Additionally, he has four different forms which pays an homage to the previous Dragon Quest games. Bringing The Hero in this franchise shows that Nintendo is listening to audiences from around the world. Similarly, this also introduces fans to a new series. Furthermore, Nintendo reveals that Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition S is coming to western audiences for the first time.
Nintendo Direct Reveals Dragon Quest Collection to Western Audiences
With the reveal of The Hero, Nintendo reveals a trailer for Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition S. In this game, you play as The Hero as he tries to stop the monsters. The Nintendo Direct reveals this game as an Action, Role-Playing Adventure. As a result, the player plays with three other players in a team to take down different monsters. With this game in particular, players can experience previous games in the Dragon Quest universe. Instead of having to buy all of the games, you can play the version with all the games inside one package. Therefore, this catches the audiences up to date with what’s going on in the story. This is amazing for the inclusion of everyone to experience the same game. Just as inclusion is important for audiences, so is having a personable president.
Doug Bowser’s First E3 as President of Nintendo of America
Within the previous months, Doug Bowser became the new President of Nintendo of America. This is his first Nintendo E3 Direct. Within the Nintendo Direct, it’s common for both Nintendo and Nintendo of America to come together. When these two come together, hilarious skits ensue. For instance, Satoru Iwata and Reggie Fils-Aime did a hilarious fight in the style of Dragon Ball Z. With this Nintendo Direct, there’s a hilarious skit with Yoshiaki Koizumi, Doug Bowser, and Bowser from Super Mario Brothers. During the skit, we can see Doug being relax and someone who can have a good laugh. I honestly felt like Doug has a lot of shoes to fill when Reggie retired. Nevertheless, I think that Doug did a fantastic job letting everyone know that he’s passionate about Nintendo. He follows through with this passion by presenting the next game in his favorite gaming franchise, Luigi’s Mansion 3.
Luigi’s Mansion 3 Brings Excitement to Fans
This Nintendo Direct showcases a lot of mechanics in Luigi’s Mansion 3. Luigi’s Mansion 3 is significantly different than the previous installments of the franchise. Within this game, Luigi, Mario, and friends spend time in a hotel. However, Mario and his friends disappear within the hotel. There are several techniques that Luigi can do with this new weapon that can help him pass through obstacles. In addition, this game has a multiplayer. This campaign requires the player to team up with others to catch as many ghosts as they can within the time frame. From this gameplay reveal trailer, so much love is going into this game. This shows that Nintendo cares about their franchise regardless of who the main character is. Just as Nintendo is showing love for long running franchises, Nintendo is also showing love for Indie games like The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics.
Nintendo Showcases Role-Playing, Chess Indie Game during the Nintendo Direct
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics reveals itself during the Nintendo Direct. The gameplay that we see makes the game look very interesting. At first, this game kind of reminds me of a game of Chess. This is due to the fact that the player can put their team members in different areas affecting the dynamic of the game. Different events can trigger that can cause not only additional damage but have your team members move back. I feel like this game would be best for gamers who love strategic gameplay. Needless to say, Nintendo shows love for their indie developers this year at E3. Being able to give developers the chance to produce the best work that they can do to a new audience. While Nintendo gives light to indie developers, they also give news about previous reveal games like The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening.
Nintendo Gives The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening a Well Deserve Update
Finally, players see the first gameplay of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening. This game originally appears as the last teaser of a previous Nintendo Direct on February 13, 2019. I’m glad that we get to see this game again after only a few months. The gameplay is almost identical to the original The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening on the Game Boy Color. Needless to say, the graphics are spectacularly different than the original game. In addition, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening includes a dungeon maker for additional items. This shows that Nintendo wants to reveal the most recent information to keep fans excitement high. Instead of leaving everyone in the dark, Nintendo decides to showcase extensive gameplay for an underrated Legend of Zelda game. While Nintendo showcases news about previous beloved reveal titles, Nintendo introduces audiences to Trials of Mana to western audiences.
Trials of Mana is Getting a Release to Western Audiences
Within this Nintendo Direct, their seems to be an emphasis on getting games localized. For instance, Trials of Mana is making its way to a western audience. From what we see in the trailer, the player seems to take control of several different characters. Without a doubt, each one of these characters is going to have their own character arc. The thing that looks most intriguing about Trials of Mana is the Role-Playing mechanic. In particular, this game has a free-range battle mechanism. Personally, I’m glad Nintendo is pushing games to be localized. Being able to get a game localized is huge because this gives games a chance to have a wider audience. An even better expression of the importance of localization is within the next game Nintendo reveals, Collection of Mana.
Nintendo Direct Expresses the Importance of Localization in Video Games
Following the reveal of Trials of Mana, Nintendo reveals a trailer for Collection of Mana. This is a collection of three previous installments to the Mana franchise. For the first time, these games have made a release outside of Japan. This is huge for gamers who love this series. Additionally, having this collection means that players can finally experience the full game. Since the release date of Trials of Mana isn’t until 2020, this gives fans the opportunity to fully dive deeper into the lore. With Nintendo localizing these games, this gives players the hope that other games can get a localization. This presence of Nintendo pushing for localization is huge for so many fans in the video game industry. Nintendo has not only revealed the push for localization, but for bringing more powerful games like The Witcher III: Wild Hunt to the Nintendo Switch.
The Witcher III: Wild Hunt Reminds Players the Power of the Nintendo Switch
Nintendo doesn’t disappoint fans with the reveal of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Complete Edition. Powerful games have come to the Nintendo Switch before like Elder Scrolls: Skyrim for example. With that being said, this game by CD PROJEKT RED reveals itself during Nintendo’s E3 press conference. From what we see in this teaser, this game flows very well. There doesn’t seem to be any buffering or frame rate issues. Unfortunately, we don’t get much information from the teaser we see. However, this is a game that has already made an appearance on other consoles. Nintendo revealing this game is actually a good thing for the company. The reason for this is because of the possibility of more powerful games coming to the Nintendo Switch in the future. Just as Nintendo promises more powerful games on the system, Nintendo gives the promise of more games with consequences.
Choose Your Destiny in Fire Emblem: Three Houses
For several months, Nintendo has been revealing information regarding a particular game under the name Fire Emblem: Three Houses. The Fire Emblem franchise has been a steady growing, Japanese franchise. One of the unique characteristics of this game is the fact that your choices matter. As the main character, the player chooses which house you want to aid. This decision will seal a player’s fate into how the story will unfold. Typically, Nintendo doesn’t have a lot of games where the player’s actions have consequences. Within the most recent years however, games like The Walking Dead that require player interaction has increased. As this genre grows, Nintendo shows that player’s actions can have consequences. This expansion can bring the excitement for other games as well as original games being made onto the Nintendo Switch. While Nintendo is expanding their interactive genres, suspenseful games like Resident Evil are getting love.
Resident Evil Making Its Way to the Nintendo Switch
During this Nintendo Direct, Resident Evil, Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 5, and Resident Evil 6 are coming to the Nintendo Switch. This is unusual since fans of Nintendo haven’t seen this series on a Nintendo console since the Nintendo GameCube. The story behind Resident Evil is an organization has to stop evil creatures from taking over the world. This series has a lot of violence and mature content. This isn’t surprising that Nintendo hasn’t seen a game from this franchise in a long time. In the past, Nintendo’s primary focus was on families and bringing people together. With this reintroduction, this opens doors to other horror games that can come to the Nintendo Switch. Additionally, this allows distribution of games to a wider audience. With the reintroduction of the horror genre, Nintendo has also revealed interest in quick time event games.
Travis Touchdown Returns in No More Heroes III
Nintendo reveals in a hilariously done trailer that No More Heroes III is coming to the Nintendo Switch. At first glance, this game looks like a lot of fun. Firstly, we meet the cocky yet hilarious main character Travis Touchdown. Travis has a totally laid-back, but he has to get the job done type of attitude. Within the trailer, there are these red arrows that flash on the screen. In some video games, there are events name Quick Time Events. These events require extremely fast reflects in order to perform the move perfectly. If the player misses a cue, then the protagonist gets hurt. Similarly, this would be the same way as a real-life situation. Nintendo being able to throw players into events that make them think on their feet is exciting. While Nintendo continues to expand on quick time event games, so is the rise of shooting games.
