Within the summertime, there’s a lot of different events to look forward to.  For people who love video games, there’s one event that every gamer looks forward to.  This event’s name is E3. E3 is an industry press conference where video game developers from Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo reveal games.  Especially, since these games are developer’s income for the next few years.  However, for E3 2019, Sony didn’t make an appearance this year.  This is unusual because all of the companies show something for E3.  On June 11, 2019, Nintendo came front and center with their E3 presentation.  Without a doubt, Nintendo’s E3 Direct is by far the best press conference. In this review, we’re going to dive deeper into each game that this Nintendo Direct reveals and how Nintendo creates an impact within E3 2019.

A New Hero Appears in Super Smash Brothers Ultimate

The first thing that Nintendo reveals is Downloadable Content for Super Smash Brothers Ultimate.  From the beginning, Super Smash Brothers Ultimate always has a large audience.  So, this isn’t a surprise that Nintendo decides to release a new character.  However, fans weren’t expecting The Hero from Dragon Quest.  The Hero is a character that many people in Japan would know.  Especially, since Dragon Quest has only been an exclusive Japanese game.  From what we see in the Direct, The Hero looks diverse. Additionally, he has four different forms which pays an homage to the previous Dragon Quest games. Bringing The Hero in this franchise shows that Nintendo is listening to audiences from around the world.  Similarly, this also introduces fans to a new series.  Furthermore, Nintendo reveals that Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition S is coming to western audiences for the first time.

With the reveal of The Hero, Nintendo reveals a trailer for Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition S. In this game, you play as The Hero as he tries to stop the monsters.  The Nintendo Direct reveals this game as an Action, Role-Playing Adventure.  As a result, the player plays with three other players in a team to take down different monsters.  With this game in particular, players can experience previous games in the Dragon Quest universe.  Instead of having to buy all of the games, you can play the version with all the games inside one package.  Therefore, this catches the audiences up to date with what’s going on in the story.  This is amazing for the inclusion of everyone to experience the same game.  Just as inclusion is important for audiences, so is having a personable president.

Doug Bowser’s First E3 as President of Nintendo of America

Yoshiaki Koizumi, Doug Bowser, and Bowser do a hilarious skit together. All of the credit as well as rights for this image goes to Nintendo. This image is found at four minutes and fifty eight seconds on the official Nintendo YouTube page under the title “Nintendo Direct for E3 2019”.

Within the previous months, Doug Bowser became the new President of Nintendo of America.  This is his first Nintendo E3 Direct.  Within the Nintendo Direct, it’s common for both Nintendo and Nintendo of America to come together.  When these two come together, hilarious skits ensue.  For instance, Satoru Iwata and Reggie Fils-Aime did a hilarious fight in the style of Dragon Ball Z.  With this Nintendo Direct, there’s a hilarious skit with Yoshiaki Koizumi, Doug Bowser, and Bowser from Super Mario Brothers.  During the skit, we can see Doug being relax and someone who can have a good laugh.  I honestly felt like Doug has a lot of shoes to fill when Reggie retired.  Nevertheless, I think that Doug did a fantastic job letting everyone know that he’s passionate about Nintendo.  He follows through with this passion by presenting the next game in his favorite gaming franchise, Luigi’s Mansion 3.

Luigi’s Mansion 3 Brings Excitement to Fans

Luigi tries to run away from an angry King Boo. All credit as well as rights for this image goes to Next Level Games and Nintendo. This image is found on Nintendo’s official E3 website under the title “Luigi’s Mansion 3”.

This Nintendo Direct showcases a lot of mechanics in Luigi’s Mansion 3.  Luigi’s Mansion 3 is significantly different than the previous installments of the franchise.  Within this game, Luigi, Mario, and friends spend time in a hotel.  However, Mario and his friends disappear within the hotel.  There are several techniques that Luigi can do with this new weapon that can help him pass through obstacles.  In addition, this game has a multiplayer.  This campaign requires the player to team up with others to catch as many ghosts as they can within the time frame.  From this gameplay reveal trailer, so much love is going into this game.  This shows that Nintendo cares about their franchise regardless of who the main character is.   Just as Nintendo is showing love for long running franchises, Nintendo is also showing love for Indie games like The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics.

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics reveals itself during the Nintendo Direct.  The gameplay that we see makes the game look very interesting.  At first, this game kind of reminds me of a game of Chess.  This is due to the fact that the player can put their team members in different areas affecting the dynamic of the game.  Different events can trigger that can cause not only additional damage but have your team members move back.  I feel like this game would be best for gamers who love strategic gameplay.  Needless to say, Nintendo shows love for their indie developers this year at E3.  Being able to give developers the chance to produce the best work that they can do to a new audience.  While Nintendo gives light to indie developers, they also give news about previous reveal games like The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening.

Nintendo Gives The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening a Well Deserve Update

Finally, players see the first gameplay of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening.  This game originally appears as the last teaser of a previous Nintendo Direct on February 13, 2019. I’m glad that we get to see this game again after only a few months.  The gameplay is almost identical to the original The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening on the Game Boy Color. Needless to say, the graphics are spectacularly different than the original game.  In addition, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening includes a dungeon maker for additional items.  This shows that Nintendo wants to reveal the most recent information to keep fans excitement high.  Instead of leaving everyone in the dark, Nintendo decides to showcase extensive gameplay for an underrated Legend of Zelda game. While Nintendo showcases news about previous beloved reveal titles, Nintendo introduces audiences to Trials of Mana to western audiences.

Trials of Mana is Getting a Release to Western Audiences

Within this Nintendo Direct, their seems to be an emphasis on getting games localized.  For instance, Trials of Mana is making its way to a western audience. From what we see in the trailer, the player seems to take control of several different characters.  Without a doubt, each one of these characters is going to have their own character arc.  The thing that looks most intriguing about Trials of Mana is the Role-Playing mechanic.  In particular, this game has a free-range battle mechanism.  Personally, I’m glad Nintendo is pushing games to be localized. Being able to get a game localized is huge because this gives games a chance to have a wider audience.  An even better expression of the importance of localization is within the next game Nintendo reveals, Collection of Mana

Nintendo Direct Expresses the Importance of Localization in Video Games

Following the reveal of Trials of Mana, Nintendo reveals a trailer for Collection of Mana.  This is a collection of three previous installments to the Mana franchise.  For the first time, these games have made a release outside of Japan.  This is huge for gamers who love this series.  Additionally, having this collection means that players can finally experience the full game.  Since the release date of Trials of Mana isn’t until 2020, this gives fans the opportunity to fully dive deeper into the lore.  With Nintendo localizing these games, this gives players the hope that other games can get a localization.  This presence of Nintendo pushing for localization is huge for so many fans in the video game industry.  Nintendo has not only revealed the push for localization, but for bringing more powerful games like The Witcher III: Wild Hunt to the Nintendo Switch.

The Witcher III: Wild Hunt Reminds Players the Power of the Nintendo Switch

Nintendo doesn’t disappoint fans with the reveal of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Complete Edition.  Powerful games have come to the Nintendo Switch before like Elder Scrolls: Skyrim for example.  With that being said, this game by CD PROJEKT RED reveals itself during Nintendo’s E3 press conference.  From what we see in this teaser, this game flows very well.  There doesn’t seem to be any buffering or frame rate issues.  Unfortunately, we don’t get much information from the teaser we see.  However, this is a game that has already made an appearance on other consoles. Nintendo revealing this game is actually a good thing for the company.  The reason for this is because of the possibility of more powerful games coming to the Nintendo Switch in the future.  Just as Nintendo promises more powerful games on the system, Nintendo gives the promise of more games with consequences.

For several months, Nintendo has been revealing information regarding a particular game under the name Fire Emblem: Three Houses.  The Fire Emblem franchise has been a steady growing, Japanese franchise. One of the unique characteristics of this game is the fact that your choices matter.  As the main character, the player chooses which house you want to aid.  This decision will seal a player’s fate into how the story will unfold.  Typically, Nintendo doesn’t have a lot of games where the player’s actions have consequences.  Within the most recent years however, games like The Walking Dead that require player interaction has increased.  As this genre grows, Nintendo shows that player’s actions can have consequences.  This expansion can bring the excitement for other games as well as original games being made onto the Nintendo Switch. While Nintendo is expanding their interactive genres, suspenseful games like Resident Evil are getting love.

Resident Evil Making Its Way to the Nintendo Switch

During this Nintendo Direct, Resident Evil, Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 5, and Resident Evil 6 are coming to the Nintendo Switch. This is unusual since fans of Nintendo haven’t seen this series on a Nintendo console since the Nintendo GameCube.  The story behind Resident Evil is an organization has to stop evil creatures from taking over the world.  This series has a lot of violence and mature content.  This isn’t surprising that Nintendo hasn’t seen a game from this franchise in a long time. In the past, Nintendo’s primary focus was on families and bringing people together. With this reintroduction, this opens doors to other horror games that can come to the Nintendo Switch.  Additionally, this allows distribution of games to a wider audience.  With the reintroduction of the horror genre, Nintendo has also revealed interest in quick time event games.

Travis Touchdown Returns in No More Heroes III

Nintendo reveals in a hilariously done trailer that No More Heroes III is coming to the Nintendo Switch.  At first glance, this game looks like a lot of fun.  Firstly, we meet the cocky yet hilarious main character Travis Touchdown.  Travis has a totally laid-back, but he has to get the job done type of attitude.  Within the trailer, there are these red arrows that flash on the screen.  In some video games, there are events name Quick Time Events.  These events require extremely fast reflects in order to perform the move perfectly.  If the player misses a cue, then the protagonist gets hurt.  Similarly, this would be the same way as a real-life situation.  Nintendo being able to throw players into events that make them think on their feet is exciting.  While Nintendo continues to expand on quick time event games, so is the rise of shooting games.

Contra Rages Itself Back Onto the Nintendo Switch

With the release of the Nintendo Switch, a franchise has comeback to pay homage to old school Nintendo fans.  The franchise Contra is receiving two games. The name of the two games are Contra Rogue Corps and Contra Anniversary Collection.  Both of these games add a significant introduction to the shooting game genre.  With Contra Rogue Corps, players get to experience a new addition to the Contra franchise.  Additionally, Contra Anniversary Collection revives the older games and brings them to a newer generation.  Personally, I’m very happy to see that Nintendo is showing balance.  Balance is incredibly important with a video game company. Where developers can create games more suitable to children while others are more suitable for adults.  With this spectrum, Nintendo can cater to everyone.  Another game that can cater towards a more mature audience is Daemon X Machina.

Nintendo Direct Reveals Information about Daemon X Machina

Another game that Nintendo reveals in this E3 Direct is Daemon X Machina.  This game appears to be a more mature, fighting game.  From the information that Nintendo reveals, Daemon X Machina focuses a lot of story on the team the player works with.  The option to create a character is present.  Instead of connecting to a protagonist, the player can now create themselves into the game.  The gameplay looks intense and incredibly fast.  There’s a lot of sci-fi and machine action like the anime “Neon Genesis Evangelion” for example.  In terms of games, Nintendo just keeps showing that there’s no game the Nintendo Switch can’t handle.  Likewise, the different amount of mature genres Nintendo is trying to shows that they are willing to gain players in different genres.  Even with Daemon X Machina, Panzer Dragoon portrays remaster games being release on the Nintendo Switch.

Panzer Dragoon Gets an Update

This dragoon flies through this fantasy type landscape. All of the credit as well as the rights of this image belongs to SEGA, MegaPixel Studio S.A., Forever Entertainment S.A., and Nintendo. This image is found on Nintendo’s official website under the title “Panzer Dragoon: Remake”.

Within this Nintendo Direct, there’s a constant theme of remasters.  A remaster is when an older game gets an upgrade to modern graphics.  Panzer Dragoon reveals itself as a remaster teaser trailer.  Sadly, Nintendo didn’t release a lot of information regarding this game.  However, audiences do see a game an outline of a promising game.  This game is a typical flying and shooting game much like in other games like Star Fox 64 for example.  What drags me into this game is how beautiful the background looks.  I can’t get over how this remaster has significantly improved the original graphics.  Fans can look at Nintendo and look forward to possibly more remasters of previous games.  Nintendo has not only improved remaster games but have also implement previous merchandise into newer games.

Nintendo Reveals More News about Pokémon Sword and Shield

The player takes in the view of the Wild Area. All credit as well as rights to this image belong to GAME FREAK Inc., Creature Inc., and Nintendo. This image is found on Nintendo’s official website under the title ” Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield”.

Nintendo has made use of merchandise within the new Pokémon game. In the new game, Pokémon Sword and Shield, players can use the PokeBall Plus accessory.  Originally, this is an item that is only available for Pokémon Let’s Go Eevee and Pikachu. This new method is incredibly smart due to the fact that the Poke Ball Plus has more than one feature.  Also, Nintendo reveals in the Direct the water type gym leader, Nessa.  There is more news that Gamefreak reveals about Pokémon Sword and Shield at a separate press conference.  I plan on talking about this news but that’s going to be in another article.  Nintendo has shown a sense of resourcefulness of using previously release game mechanics and adding them to their new game.  As Pokémon continues to have a lot of eyes on it, so does the next game that Nintendo reveals Astral Chain.

Astral Chain Gaining a lot of Media Coverage

The main character and there Legion fight against an artificial intelligence. All credit as well as rights of this image belong to PlatinumGames Inc., Masakazu Katsura, Shueisha, and Nintendo. This image is found on Nintendo’s official E3 website under the title “Astral Chain”.

One game that Nintendo reveals name Astral Chain is getting a slow rise of popularity.  In this game, the earth reveals to be in the middle of invasion.  The police calls in a special force to handle these artificial intelligence.  This special force is the only one that can take down the monsters with a connection name the Legion.  The main character controls one of the monsters to fight together as one being.  They fight together to defend the earth.  Throughout the previous directs, this game has been releasing information.  This shows the dedication that Nintendo has to this franchise.  For countless number of years, Nintendo has become a company to show dedication to their franchises.  This is the reason why Nintendo has the same character even after so many years.  Even though Nintendo loves their ongoing franchises, they’ve also welcome new franchises like Empire of Sin for instance.

The Underdog and Mobster Game, Empire of Sin

The mafia is in a hot spot with this showdown. The credit as well as the rights of this image belong to Paradox Interactive AB, Romero Games, and Nintendo. This image can be found on Nintendo’s official E3 website under the title “Empire of Sin”.

One game that the presentation reveals is a 1920s style mafia game name Empire of Sin .  Personally, I’m a huge fan of not only 1920s media, but anything regarding the mafia. The amount of story potential in this genre is large.  From the teaser, we see three different characters walking around causing chaos.  Sadly, the teaser only shows a little bit of information about this game.  However, the images we do see an outline of what this game can become.  When the camera pans up, the builds go into an outline with missions.  An open world, working yourself to the top mafia game would be incredible.  Nintendo is always open to new possibilities.  That’s one of the things that I didn’t see in some of the other E3 press conferences.  Just as Nintendo is open to licensing new franchises, Nintendo has also become open to license other franchises.

Marvel Fans Rejoice with Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order

Several superhero icons including Captain America, Iron Man, Captain Marvel, Thor, and Starlord charge into battle. The credit as well as the rights of this image belong to Marvel, KOEI TECMO GAMES CO., LTD., Team Ninja, and Nintendo. This image can be found on Nintendo’s official E3 website under the title “Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order”.

Nintendo license’s Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order making this game available on the Nintendo Switch.  From what we see in the trailer, different marvel superheroes come together to try to stop Thanos and other villains from collecting the Infinity Stones.  With the recent Avengers: Endgame, there’s no surprise that Marvel would want to make a game.  Gaining a license to play the game on the Nintendo Switch is incredibly smart.  This shows that Nintendo is willing to work with other major companies.  Just as Nintendo is licensing with other major companies, Nintendo has been doing collaborations with developers to create games like Cadence of Hyrule – Crypt of the NecroDancer Featuring The Legend of Zelda.

Nintendo Direct Reveals Collaboration with Indie Developer

This image can be found on Nintendo’s official E3 website under the title ” Cadence of Hyrule ~ Crypt of the NecroDancer Featuring The Legend of Zelda ~”.

Within the video game industry, there are some games that companies collaborate together to create.  Nintendo and video game developer Brace Yourself Games came together to combine two different games together.  Brace Yourself Games uses their game Crypt of the NecroDancer with The Legend of Zelda to create Cadence of Hyrule – Crypt of the NecroDancer Featuring The Legend of Zelda. These collaborations are fun for all sides.  For the fans of both franchises, they get to see their favorite elements in this game.  On the other hand, players can be expose to a game they’ve never experience.  With Nintendo creating an involvement with the indie companies posing for partnership opportunities.  If these games do well, then Nintendo can have those indie companies as apart of Nintendo.  This type of collaboration have been done well much like in the family-oriented game, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020

As with every Nintendo Direct, there has to be one game that’s keeping families into consideration.  More specifically, party games have a primary focus that more than one person can play.  During this direct, the new addition to the Olympic franchise reveals itself as Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.  In this game, there are sports like swimming, boxing, and gymnastics.  With so many of these sports, the player has the option to play with computers or with others.  Nintendo encourages players to play with others like friends or family for example.  Even though Nintendo has been exploring different genres, party games will never be thrown into the shadows.  Just as Nintendo prepares families with party games, games like Animal Crossing: New Horizons give players a chance to get lost in their own world.

Nintendo Finally Reveals News Regarding Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Multiple villagers look longingly at the sunset. All credit as well as the rights of this image belong to Nintendo. This image can be found on Nintendo’s official E3 website under the title ” Animal Crossing: New Horizons”.

Being able to get lost in a game is why so many players love Animal Crossing.  After months of waiting, Nintendo finally provides fans news on Animal Crossing: New Horizons.  The news Nintendo reveals provide more information than fans know what to do with.  With this game, you don’t start out in a town.  Instead, you start on a deserted island.  In comparison, this game is significantly different from the previous installments. Giving the player to literally create an entire island is incredible. Nintendo makes it clear that players will get lost in the wonderful world of Animal Crossing: New Horizons.  Just as players can spend hours playing this game, there are other games in the next montage that can get players coming back to Nintendo.

Nintendo Direct Reveals a Highlight Reel Showing the Potential of the Nintendo Switch

This is the icon for The Nintendo Switch. The credit as well as the rights of this image belong to Nintendo. This image can be found on Nintendo’s official YouTube page under the video “Nintendo Direct for E3 2019” at thirty six minutes and five seconds.

In this next part of the Nintendo Direct, Nintendo puts together a montage of different games coming to the Nintendo Switch.  When you look at this library, it will take your breath away.  In other words, there are tons of different genres for everyone.  Some games from the montage include Spyro: Reignited Trilogy, Minecraft: Dungeons, Wolfenstein: Youngblood, Super Mario Maker 2, and Dragon Quest: Builders 2 to name just a few since there’s so many games coming to the Nintendo Switch. This range of a library shows that Nintendo isn’t slowing down with content for players.  For many years, I found myself drift to other companies because Nintendo wasn’t providing a wide enough gaming variety.  Since the Nintendo Switch’s release, I’ve made my way back to this wonderful company.  While so many franchises are coming to Nintendo, one unforgettable franchise and iconic duo comes back to Nintendo with open arms.

Nintendo 64 Iconic Duo Finally Make There Way Back Home

Banjo-Kazooie have come home. The credit as well as the rights of this image belong to Rare, Ltd., Microsoft, and Nintendo. This image can be found on Nintendo’s official YouTube page under the video “Nintendo Direct for E3 2019” at thirty nine minutes and twenty two seconds.

After we see the potential franchises for the Nintendo Switch, one memorable franchise makes its way back home.  To many fans’ disbelief, Banjo-Kazooie is the next Downloadable Content for Super Smash Brothers Ultimate.  This news single handily sent shock waves through the video game communities.  Fans are ecstatic that a well-beloved iconic duo is back at Nintendo.  All of the moves that Banjo and Kazooie have are straight out of the games they’re from.  Everything is put into this character like Kazooie spewing eggs from her beak and Banjo’s iconic laugh.  This is why so many people love Nintendo.  With the mess of Super Smash Brothers Ballet, so many fans were distraught that Bayonetta won.  This shows that Nintendo reviews what gamers want and how to keep into consideration certain franchises.  Even with the addition of this amazing character, fans weren’t expecting Nintendo to drop another bomb on fans.

A Sequel Reveal No One Was Expecting

Zelda is shocked looking at something off screen. The credit as well as the rights of this image belong to Nintendo. This image can be found on Nintendo’s official YouTube page under the video “Nintendo Direct for E3 2019” at forty one minutes and fifty four seconds.

There is one sequel review no one was expecting.  One of the last teasers that Nintendo drops during the Nintendo Direct shook fans.  We first see energy swirling around a mummified body.  Afterwards, we see Link and Zelda from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.  From looking at this game, this feels almost like Majora’s Mask.  We see little shots of this eerie looking game which builds anticipation.  Suddenly, Nintendo reveals that a sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is in development.  Nintendo listens to their passionate fans and provides that a sequel to a glorious game. With both a new game of Breath of the Wild and Banjo-Kazooie being in Super Smash Brothers Ultimate, this proves that Nintendo listens to their fans.  This moment ensures a spot that Nintendo can provide what fans have the most dedication to.

A Bright Future for Nintendo

Within this review, we’ve examine why Nintendo did so well within E3 2019. Nintendo has proven itself to be more open with other video game genres like horror, party games, and Japanese Role-Playing games to name a few. Nintendo has shown dedication through reviving old franchises like Banjo-Kazooie and Contra. Some games are even getting localization due to Nintendo releasing games to western audiences. After this E3, the future of Nintendo looks bright and full of promise. Honestly like so many other gamers, I’m looking forward to what Nintendo has in store.
