Morbius The Living Vampire
In 2018 Jared Leto Morbius became attached to a new Sony project. Although the folks over at Marvel repeatedly said that Venom is in a separate universe from the Sony-Marvel Spider-Man, they can no longer keep them separate after this new trailer dropped.
The trailer begins with a slowed down version of Fur Elise and narration. Michael Morbius, a biochemist with a rare blood disease that he is desperately seeking the cure for. He feels that he is still alive because he is meant to find the cure for it. But time is of the essence. He then charters a helicopter to take him to a cave (what is it with origin stories and caves?) where a mysterious artifact has the answer he’s been looking for.
Dark Caves Always Hold Promise
After cutting his hand and placing it into said artifact, the cave is immediately filled with bats and begins attacking the others around him. Once he is back state side, he finds himself locked away in a glass box (ala Joe Goldberg style) probably by his co-worker, Martine Bancroft. Michael finds that as he punches the glass in frustration, the glass begins to crack. Bancroft begins to fear for him and more than likely, takes him out to run test.
He begins to explain what effects are taking over his body (sudden abs appear!). He has increased strength, as evidenced by him picking up what appears to be a sarcophagus. Increased speed, he runs down a hallway Nightcrawler style. And a very cool looking effect of him being able to use Echo Location. On the downside, he wants to suck some blood pretty badly.
Into the Spider-Verse
After facing some attacks from what I assume is either the US government or the corporation that he works for, we see him in an orange jumpsuit walking down an alley. As he’s walking, we see a familiar web head mural painting behind him. The wall drawing depicts Spider-Man with his hand outstretched and over his face is the word MURDERER.
This seems to be the first clue that Morbius will take place in the same universe as the Sony-Marvel Spider-Man movies. Spoilers for those who haven’t seen Far From Home yet, but at the end of the movie, Spider-Man is framed for the murder of Mysterio. It’s more than likely that Peter (Tom Holland) is on the run from authorities until he can clear his name.
A sudden Matt Smith appears! I had no idea that he was going to be a part of this movie and I am so stoked to see him in it! *Crosses fingers for a Doctor/Pond reunion* We then get a shot of Michael fully morphing out into his Vampire form and it doesn’t look as bad as I thought it would.
At the very end of the trailer, we get a surprise from a familiar villain. Michael Keaton’s Vulture appears to be out on the street as Morbius walks by him. At the end of Spider-Man Homecoming, Adrian Toomes, was arrested for his crimes and thrown in jail. For the few seconds that he is on screen, he appears to still be wearing his prison uniform from Homecoming. Does this mean he broke out? Is he trying to put together a Villains Initiative?
