Hamilton the Musical Took Over Broadway Like Never Before

Throughout history, the theater has always struck a chord with audiences.  Whether it be the story or the cinematography.  Regardless, theater to this day is still incredibly popular.  Especially when it comes to plays with music.  Musicals have been incredibly popular.  Plays like The Book of Mormon, Avenue Q, Wicked, and many more have change people’s perspective of theater.   Undoubtedly, there’s one play that everyone has seen that has made an impact.  Then in 2015, one particular play completely took over the scene of Broadway.  This play is nonother than Hamilton the Musical.  Set in the time of colonial America, Hamilton the Musical takes American history and puts a twist on it.  Specifically, Hamilton the Musical uses a combination of modern music in addition to typical Broadway music to create a play worth remembering. Then, on July 3rd, 2020, Hamilton the Musical made its way onto Disney Plus.

At first glance, Hamilton the Musical seems incredibly weird.  Colonial Americans and the founding fathers rapping about the rise of The United States? At first, I didn’t like this play whatsoever.  With that in mind, there’s something about this musical that captures the audience’s attention as well as curiosity.  As the musical progresses, my feelings for the play significantly changes.  What is it that changes other’s perspectives? Why is Hamilton the Musical so beloved by everyone? Let’s find out together. In this review, we’re analyzing how Hamilton the Musical captures audiences through the story, characters, cinematography, and music.

The story of Hamilton the Musical follows Alexander Hamilton during the creation of The United States.  One of the things that makes this Broadway musical shine is the story.  Essentially, the creators of Hamilton the Musical took periods of time of Alexander Hamilton’s life and made it interesting to learn.  Originally, Alexander Hamilton comes to the colonies in search of a new life and prosperity.  As he moves up, even more decisions come into Hamilton’s life.  Even so, the audience gets to see how he becomes one of the founding fathers of the United States.  Within this play, many themes express themselves through the characters.  Especially the theme of legacy.  How will people remember you and tell your story?

This is a question that many of us ask ourselves.  What will others say about us when we’re no longer around? Hamilton the Musical focuses a lot on this theme.  Which is undeniably one of the reasons why so many people love this musical.  The fact that the audience gets to see how these character’s stories unfold.  Without a doubt, the characters are the driving factor of this musical.

Hamilton the Musical Shows the Growth of Three Dimensional Characters

Furthermore, according to Disney Plus’s official website under the section, “Watch Hamilton: Full Movie: Disney+.”, the Walt Disney Company explains that “the actors playing the roles of Aaron Burr plus Alexander Hamilton are Leslie Odom Jr. and Lin-Manuel Miranda” (2).  Not only this but according to the Walt Disney Company’s official website under the article “Hamilton”, The Walt Disney Company states that “the rights and credit for Hamilton the Musical belongs to Lin-Manuel Miranda and Nevis Productions, LLC” (1).  This image is on the Walt Disney Company’s official website under the article “Hamilton”.

One of the driving factors of Hamilton the Musical is the characters.  While yes, the characters are the founding fathers of the United States. In addition to a number of other characters.  At first glance, one might wonder how to make a play about the founding fathers entertaining? Well, Hamilton the Musical does this incredibly well.  Each of the characters in this musical goes through their own character arcs.  In fact, most of the characters have themes that drive their characteristics.  Like for instance, one-character name Aaron Burr lives by living his life by waiting for the opportunity. Which conflicts many of the characters within this play.  Without a doubt, each of the characters in this play can draw attention to different audience members.

Which is huge because this gives audience members the opportunity to relate to different characters.  Since there are so many different types of characters.  One of the things that Hamilton the Musical does that helps captures audiences is the unique cinematography.

The Cinematography of Hamilton the Musical Tells the Story of Alexander Hamilton

Hamilton the Musical has some of the most unique use of cinematography.  This video is a recording of the original Broadway cast during one of their shows.  With that in mind, the production does several camera angles.  In addition, the usage of cameras doesn’t look out of sorts.  As a result, the amount of detail in this play is huge.  There’s a revolving floor where characters look like their moving.  Plus, other characters are interacting with the second floor.  In fact, each character has their own cinematography.  For instance, one of the characters is King George the Third.  His songs are choreographed in a way to show that he’s above everyone else. Similarly, each song changes the cinematography depending on the character who’s mainly singing the song.

Nevertheless, this fact alone captures the audience’s attention.  Being able to have different cinematography with each character.  With that in mind, one of the last things that this musical captures its audience is the music.

The Music of Hamilton the Musical is Unique Yet Flows Incredibly Well

Finally, let’s take a look at the music.  More specifically, Hamilton the Musical has some of the most diverse music that is in a Broadway musical.  Typically, Broadway musicals have a number of ballets and theater songs.  Which includes a large number of performers.  However, Hamilton the Musical uses hip-hop music in addition to ballets.  Generally, hip-hop isn’t a genre that is typically on Broadway.  Since Hamilton the Musical is a musical, the songs are made to move the story along.  Without a doubt, the wide range of music is really intriguing.  Even at times, genres overlap to make their own songs.  For instance, there’s one song in this play name “Helpless”.  Which is a show tune while at the same time has some hip-hop elements.  However, the mixture isn’t out of place.  In anything, it’s a combination of Eliza and Alexander’s music most like their lives coming together.

Within this play, the music has some of the most diverse and complex music.  Without a doubt, Hamilton the Musical can capture audiences with its music alone.  Even if the play isn’t for you, defiantly give the music a try.

With their own struggles as well as major character development.  Also, the cinematography brings audiences to between the 1770s and the 1800s.  At the same time, the creators of this musical change the dynamic with some modern dances.
