The Hype Surrounding Cyberpunk 2077 Was So High…What Happened?

For years, gamers have been waiting for one game.  A game that CD Projekt Red has been advertising for years.  This game is non other than Cyberpunk 2077.  Originally, this game was advertised as a groundbreaking, futuristic game.  After pushback and more pushback, many gamers thought Cyberpunk 2077 would never come out.  Now, pushing back release dates isn’t anything new.  If a developer doesn’t feel like their game is ready, then they push back the release date.  For the most part, many gamers understand.  As creating a game takes a lot of time and development from the team behind the project.  Then on December 10, 2020, gamers finally got their hands on a project eight years in the making.  Unfortunately, Cyberpunk 2077’s release was a beyond nightmare breaking the trust of gamers in addition to publishers. What happened to cause such a disastrous of a release?

Strapon in because this is one hell of a story.  In this news article, we’re thoroughly analyzing how Cyberpunk 2077 nightmare release breaks the trust of gamers and publishers.

Leading Up to the Release of Cyberpunk 2077, There’s A Lot of Red Flags

So, why did Cyberpunk 2077 have such a disaster of a release when the praise for this game was so high? During the development of Cyberpunk 2077, developer CD Projekt Red did a lot of things to provoke red flags.  According to Gamerant’s website under the article, “Cyberpunk 2077 Developers Upset with CD Projekt Red Management Over Launch Troubles”, the writer of this article Trevor Edwards explains that “CD Projekt Red management were overworking team in order to ensure a release date” (2).  Essentially, CD Projekt Red push their workers to work under incredible crushing situations.  Anyone who has been a part of projects knows about crunch time.  With that, the video game industry has been fixing its policies on crunching situations.  In order to keep their employees from not burning out.

While CD Projekt Red was doing this, they didn’t give reviewers copies of their project which is another huge red flag.  According to IGN’s official website under the article, “The Messy Messaging Behind Cyberpunk 2077’s Messy Launch, the Executive Editor at IGN Joe Skrebels explains in his article that “reviewers didn’t get a chance to see the console versions before release” (4).  CD Projekt Red never gave reviewable copies to consoles.  Only giving review copies to the PC version of the game. Now many gamers on the PC have no issues with Cyberpunk 2077.  However, gamers were going into this game with no word of what the game is like.  Which turns out into a complete disaster as gamers start to play this game on day one.  From game-breaking bugs to horrible glitches, Cyberpunk 2077 is a disaster of a game that for some gamers is completely unplayable.

After So Much Backlash, CD Projekt Red Announces Refunds Blind Siding Distributors

With no reviews for the console version, gamers went into Cyberpunk 2077 completely blind For some, this game is fine and at the least playable.  With a few glitches here and there.  However, for others, Cyberpunk 2077 is completely unplayable.  So, gamers took their thoughts to Twitter.  Gamers went to the social media platform sharing their glitches, bugs, and overall anger.  Honestly, the gamers have a right to be angry.  CD Projekt Red has been working on this game for almost eight years. For this game to be in this state is completely unacceptable.  Anyway, the anger on Twitter was incredibly high.  So much to the point that CD Projekt Red made a statement regarding this release disaster.  According to Cyberpunk 2077’s website under the article “Important Update”, CD Projekt Red S.A. gives an apology for the state of this game and offers refunds for gamers” (1-2).

At first, CD Projekt Red shows their remorse for the state of this game gamers have been waiting for.  However, this “refund” shortly blew up in CD Projekt Red’s face.  According to Polygon’s official website under the article, “Cyberpunk 2077’s refund fiasco”, Senior reporter Owen S. Good states in his article that “CD Projekt Red blindsides other companies by making promises of refunds” (2).  Suddenly, gamers blindly swarm the buyers of this game asking for refunds.  With CD Projekt Red completely blinding so many businesses, more drama ensues.  As of right now, the game is no longer available on the PlayStation Store.  Instead, Xbox as well as PlayStation is accommodating this situation.  As of right now, make sure to check out retailers to see what the return policy is for this game as policies vary.  Safe to say, this release has been disastrous for CD Projekt Red.

CD Projekt Red Needs to Be Held Accountable For Their Failures of Cyberpunk 2077

Within this news article, we thoroughly analyze how Cyberpunk 2077’s release broke the trust of so many individuals.  This game didn’t have the best development process. With no progress updates as well as overworking employees, things weren’t looking good.  When this game finally releases, Cyberpunk 2077 is a mess of glitches and bugs.  Gamers went to Twitter to vent their frustration to which CD Projekt Red an apology. To which they offer refunds for gamers which blindsides distributors.  Honestly, this whole thing shows how CD Projekt Red has fallen.  This developer has made so many amazing games. Yet, this release and how this company handles this situation is inexcusable.  Perhaps CD Projekt Red will eventually make Cyberpunk 2077 playable. However, the trust from the video game industry is all but gone.
